Well... I'm back. As you may have seen on my announcement earlier this evening, I have decided I will not discontinue this story. Thank you for supporting me while I thought through my decision. I hope you enjoy this chapter, and another one should be coming out shortly. :)
Frisk POV:
We've been working on the machine for about a week now, and Sans says that it should be ready now. I hadn't been able to help him much, mainly because Asgore and Toriel have been more watchful of me, which, I understand. Deep in thought, I fiddled with my hands, until I heard Sans' deep voice. I jumped, and saw Sans standing in front of me. He frowned, "Are you okay kid?" I chuckled, and grabbed his hand. "Yeah, I was just thinking. Let's go get Chara back." I smiled, genuinely happy and exited for once.
We teleported, and Sans gave me strict instructions on what to do. Once he started the machine, I was supposed to close my eyes and pull the level to the left of me. I got into the machine and Sans closed the heavy door. I took a deep breath and begun to hear the machine awake. I closed my eyes and grabbed the lever, pulling it down with difficultly. I could feel my legs give out from under me, and I fell to the floor, banging my head on the side of the machine. And just like that, I had fainted.
~Mini Time Skip~
Frisk POV:
I opened my eyes to see a very worried Sans shaking me awake. "Chara...?" I mumble, sitting up and holding my head. "Chara? That's all you're worried about? You could've died!" I pulled my hand away from my head to see fresh blood. "Oh..." I said, looking at Sans. "I'm alright. Where's Chara?" Sans shook his head. "Dear god, Frisk. Let me look at your head." He inspected the wound carefully, but was disrupted once I laid my head on his shoulder. "Where's Chara?" He sighed, and held me close.
"We're not doing this again. This is my fault, you got hurt..." He was silent, then he stood, holding out his hand to help me up. "It should take 24 hours at most for Chara to appear. If she isn't back by then, well... it didn't work." I nod, and stand as well, holding my head. "Let me get some bandages for that... did you pull the lever?" I bobbed my head up and down, and sat down on a nearby seat.
Chara was going to come back. I felt overwhelmingly relieved that Chara was going to be safe. Sans patched up my head, and teleported me home. As soon as I was home, I looked at my soul. The determination was growing. I smiled, and plopped onto my bed. I closed my eyes and thought of how if would be like to see Chara after such a long time away. Hopefully she wouldn't be too angry. I let my thoughts wander, as I was slowly pulled away from reality and into a deep sleep.
"Frisk?" I whipped my head around, searching for the owner of the faint voice that was calling out to me. "Help me." I saw Chara, sitting on the floor, her arms outstretched. "Oh, Chara!" I breathed, as I ran to her. "I knew you would come back." She replied sweetly. "You dirty killer." I pulled away from the hug and looked at her. Instead of Chara, it was... nothing. "Chara?" I looked around, and saw a pile in the distance. As I got closer, I saw a huge pile of dust. I clasped my mouth shut with my hand, as I saw Chara standing behind the pile. "You're too late."
I awoke with a loud a scream followed by a gasp. No more then a minute later, Toriel ran inside the room, Asgore right behind her. "Frisk?" Hot tears streaked down my face. Not tears of sadness, tears of anger. This was all Sans' fault. If he hadn't gotten rid of Chara, if he hadn't screwed up the machine. "Are you alright, Frisk?" I looked up to my parents. "I need to go to Sans. Now."
They looked at each other, confused. "But Frisk, it's the middle of the night. What could you possibly need to do now?" I swallowed, and grabbed my phone. "Never mind." Toriel sat at the end of my bed, and Asgore stayed at the door. "Frisk, what's been going on? You've been acting so strange these days." I stared straight into her eyes, angered that she hadn't noticed. "Look at me," I whispered, my voice low. "Look at my eyes." She did as told, frowning.
"Frisk?" I backed up, and got out of bed. "It doesn't matter anyways. I'll be back by the morning, I promise." I shoveled past Asgore, before he grabbed my wrist, preventing me from going any further. "Talk to your mother." I yanked away from him, angry at them, angry at the world. Why me? What did I ever do to deserve this pain? I screamed at the top of my lungs. They both jumped, staring at me in shock.
"I said... LEAVE ME ALONE!" I ran out the front door, running to the underground as quickly as possible. My heart was pounding and my lungs were begging me to stop, though I kept on going. As soon as I made it to the lab, I called Sans. He picked up after a minute or two, and I could hear him yawning on the other line. "Get over here now."
"Frisk? What do you mean, it's two in the morning." I threw the phone, falling to the floor and burying my head in my hands. I let out a scream of anger, frustration, and sadness as I sobbed. Chara wasn't coming back. My mother is dead. My father is back. Nobody cares. Nobody cares. I got up and walked over to the machine, kicking it and beating my fists against it until they were bloody and bruised. I let out another scream and turned behind me to see Sans standing there, a bewildered look on his face.
"This is all your fault." I whispered. Though the anger still lingered, I was also shocked as a single tear slid down Sans' skull. He walked over to me, and hugged me. "I know." He said, his voice breaking. "I did this to you. It's my fault, I know." I hugged him back stiffly, exhaling. "All my fault." He repeated, hugging me tighter.
