"Father!" I yell out, feeling the delicate sheet of ice crack with each step I take.
"(Y/n), stay right there! Do not move an inch!" Levi's voice rings out from the woods behind me.
"(Y/n)."
I quickly look up into my father's eyes. He's so close, just a few more steps and I'd be able to grab his arm. I can pull both of us back to safety and be in the comfort of his love, like it's always been.
"That necklace I gave you," Dad continues, "don't lose it." Another crack from the ice sends both of us in a rush of panic. "Listen, my sweet daughter, I want you to go find something in your life worth living for. Don't spend the rest of your life following my footsteps, that's gonna lead you to where I'm at right now, right here."
"Dad, stop it!" I scream. "Stop believing you're going to die here! I'll save you! Levi will save you!"
"This is it for me, kiddo." He takes two steps forward and puts his hand on my head.
I feel pressure against my stomach, pulling me back.
I blinked.
I don't know what happened after that.
(Earlier)
"Don't close your eyes, cadet," Levi tells me during our training. "You'll miss out on the important hints of my next move."
I watch his legs and hands, both are as still as a rock. Except for a slight twitch in his left leg, which comes straight up to hit me in my shin. I block it just before it meets me.
"Decent, but don't stop moving."
He punches me in my jaw, his hard knuckles getting a few cracks out of me. He then grabs my head and knees me in my stomach, making blood gush out of me more.
"Enough...I've had enough," I breathe.
"People don't stop when it comes to enemies. They'll keep going until you're dead," the captain says.
"Captain!" Eren - I learned a few of the soldier's names - comes out, saluting the asshole. "We spotted (L/n) just outside the walls near Maria."
"Did you guys take him into arrest?"
"No, sir! Our gas tanks were low on fuel. We had to rush back here immediately."
I push past Eren, sprinting to the storage area where we keep our 3DM gear at. I grab one, not caring if it isn't mine, and quickly buckle up every strap.
I fill the gas up and then head out.
Someone's arms wrap around my waist and jerk me back.
"Where are you going, cadet?" Levi questions.
"To find my father. Let me go."
Somehow I feel that same grip that I did a week ago. He's not holding me strictly, but more with care, like he's protecting me. I feel my stomach doing flips and twisting in knots.
I know Levi's doing it on purpose. And I think he knows, too.
He let's go of me and wraps a green cloak around my shoulders, buttoning the front.
"We'll be right behind you if anything goes wrong. It's dangerous beyond the walls. Watch out for titans."
I can only nod as a response.
What is happening?
Keeping all these weird moments with him in the back of my mind, I start the search for my only family.
. . .
"Dad!" I land on the frozen lake. The blood on me from killing the titans slowly seeps into the cold liquid.
"(Y/n)?" Father examines me and smiles. "They got you to join, I'm surprised." Then his smile fades slowly. "Sometimes I forget just how much of a woman you are. You're not my little girl anymore."
"You have to come with me, before they get here. I'll take you somewhere safe. We'll live a life together just like before. Just hurry up and-"
"Afraid I can't do so," he interrupts.
"What do you mean?" I take a step forward, the ice beneath my feet cracking.
"For all my life I've known only of stealing and murdering." Father reaches into the pocket of his pants, and takes out a necklace. A dark mix of red and pink shimmers on the stone. A triangle shape holds the stone in place.
"Another thing you stole?" I ask.
He shakes his head, tossing it over to me. I catch it, holding it tightly in my palm. I don't know why but I feel a strong connection to it.
"Our ancestors made it centuries ago," Father explains.
He then looks down at the lake he's standing upon. The ice shatters more every second.
"Hurry up and just run to me! You'll be okay!" My hands start shaking. His eyes focus on somebody behind me.
"Mister (L/n), you are under arrest for all the crimes you have committed in your life. You will not resist our soldiers. Your sentence will be held up to the Queen," Commander Erwin shouts. "Your actions will be solely up to-"
"JUST SHUT UP!" I yell.
I know Levi's right next to the Commander, but I don't need to look at his face to know his expression. Being with how he acted earlier, he's concerned for me, he wants to protect me. But he can't do that while I'm standing on the brink of death.
If my father and I fall in we're dead instantly.
"I'm sorry, kid, but I just can't come with you," Dad says.
"Father!" I yell out.
I feel pressure against my stomach, pulling me back.
I blink.
I can hear the sounds that I don't want to hear replaying in my mind.
Tears form at my eyes as I curl up against the familiar tone of Levi.
He holds me close, one of his hands combing through my hair as the other one squeezes me.
He whispers to me but I can't hear him.
I open my eyes and see the lake.
In the middle of it lies a big hole where my dad was standing.
I quickly scramble out of the captain's arms and crawl over to the hole.
"(Y/n), it's dangerous, don't get so close to it!" Hange tells me.
I do the only thing I can think of at the moment. I clasp the necklace around my neck, holding the stone tightly in my hand.
Then I dive in.
