Blood and Paper

The tea and food Marissa chose for me was excellent. A semi-sweet lavender tea with a croissant on the side. I knew I left my precious food deciding in good hands.

A yawns escapes my mouth as Levi and I walk back to headquarters.

"I have someplace else I want to take you," Levi's soothing voice whispers in my ear.

"Where?" I ask, rubbing the small tear from my eye.

A couple kids sprint towards us with fear on their face. The smallest girl hides behind the boy, who's frantically screaming at Levi, while the other boy holds onto me sobbing. I rub the young boy's black hair gently trying to get him to calm down.

"You have to help, please!" Is the only thing I can understand from the brunette boy.

"What's going on?" Levi asks.

The child goes back to speaking gibberish, more tears streaking down his cheeks and snot running out of his nose. I pull him over, getting on my knees and wiping away the liquids with a  spare towel I always keep on me.

"We...we were protesting with our big brother and then"- the boy hiccups -"there was a loud bang and h-he didn't get back up."

"If they're protesting why would they come to us?" Levi mumbles in my ear.

"Stay together and go directly home, okay?" I tell them. The brunette nods, which is all I needed before running off to headquarters with my fiance.

Fuck. What is going on over there?

My head races and the panicking doesn't help with my already bad stamina since becoming pregnant.

"If anything dangerous happens," Levi pants, "I want you to get on your horse and ride away."

"Fuck...no..."

"(Y/n)-"

"The hell, Levi?! I'm not...running away."

Something squishes beneath my shoes, like I just stepped in a puddle. A crimson red puddle.

My soul leaves my body as I stare down at the pool of blood.

Hange commands orders in the distance, her face twisting with disappointment and anger. Levi rushes to her side and they talk amongst themselves.

"(Y/n)!" Armin and Connie come up to me swiftly. Connie gives me a surprisingly comforting hug. Armin stands back with tears falling down from his crystal blue eyes. When Connie lets go I notice his pink nose and puffy eyes.

"What happened?" I ask, close to crying myself.

"Floch. He's...he betrayed us," Connie explains. "Him and a whole group of people shot more than a third of the Scout Regiment."

"Shit. How many are dead?"

"Nineteen-"

"But, (Y/n)-"

I look at Armin with worry, not liking the depressed tone in his voice.

"-Mikasa was hit."

.  .  .

The sight is horrific when I walk in; white cloths cover diseased bodies, the blood soaking through in some spots. Mikasa is laying on her back, unconscious, with bandages pressing against the wound in her shoulder.

I grab the pendant on my necklace and mutter curses under my breath.

"She's pulling through slowly," Hange says. "She's just in shock for now."

The woman places her hand on my shoulder and squeezes it. What she informs me on next makes my body go cold.

"Eren escaped from his cell."

I pull myself away from her suddenly. Yanking the necklace off I chuck it across the room out of boiling hot rage.

"FUCK!"

It hits the wall and shatters into pieces, scattering along the floor.

My commander stands calm even after my little outburst.

"They want to put you under arrest, (Y/n)." With that Hange leaves me to my thoughts, not wanting to piss me off more.

I dig my nails into the skin on my palms. Smoke emanates from the marks.

Of course they are.

I glance at the broken pendant and notice a small, old paper laying on the floor. I pick it up slowly and unfold it.

The writing is starting to fade but I'm able to make out most of what it says.

The Rumbling: it's a very risky task but, according to the Founding Titan, it's our only option to the extinction of-

I flip it over and a name is written on the back but it's unreadable. I keep it safe in my hand, an idea forming in my brain.

I clean up the shards and stuff them all in my pocket so Levi doesn't get upset about the mess.

"Sorry for being a nuisance," I say to Mikasa before heading on my way to Hange's laboratory.

I scrounge around for glue and scraps of metal to fix my necklace.

I quickly write down a nice message on a different piece of paper to replace the one that was originally in the pendant. Folding and shielding it with the broken pieces, I twist thin metal around the reddish crystal to hold it in place. Then I go in with tiny drops of glue, announcing that I'm done by slumping down in a chair.

I'm exhausted but my job's not done yet. I can't rest.

I carefully thread the small chains through a space I left open.

If Eren wants to start a war then I'll give him a war.
