"Could you pass me the peas please?"

I slid the bowl of peas to her and she rubbed her ear signaling for us to leave.

I looked over to my left as Gary bit into a chicken leg dipped in gravy.

He had a salt and pepper beard and backward pro bass shops hat with a beer belly to match.

Across from him, Aunt Lucy sat eating a salad. She said she was on a diet from now until the wedding.

Aunt Lucy had bleach blonde hair and had the same small frame as Gen. She looked like the average middle-aged white woman.

Red nails, a little bit of Botox, and a serious drinking problem would be her defining qualities. The women couldn't even smile without looking like Cruella de vil.

Gen and I had to go to the auto shop before it got late. We weren't even sure if it was open because there wasn't any store hours available online. Just an address was given.

We needed to get out of here but we couldn't be suspicious.

"Genevieve, tell Gary all about your time at OSU so far." Aunt Lucy said.

"Mom, Maya goes to the same school as me. I just got there." Gen added.

I gave her a look. I didn't care to talk and she was trying to get out of talking to Gary.

"Ugh please, Maya doesn't do anything  interesting." She gave me disgusted look and I took a bite of my macaroni. "She's a senior and has yet to bring a single guy home. It's pathetic really."

"I mean with a little straightening of the hair and some makeup, maybe guys would actually pay attention to you."

I sighed. It was her usual jab of the day. It's always something about my hair or my non existent love life. It's like she was a high schooler looking to fight with me.

"Why would I need to bring a guy home when you bring a new one every year?" I snipped at her.

She sneered at me and stared me down.

I knew I was being rude but I simply didn't care. She'd been breathing down my back all day.

I practically cooked this whole dinner with Gen while she just sat in front of the tv watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I was tired and it wasn't even 3 yet.

I turned my attention to Gary. "Don't get comfortable number 7. She'll replace you once you leave and then it'll be a Micheal taking your spot. Maybe even a Dan."

He looked at me with a confused look on his face and I placed my fork down on the plate.

"Oh, don't start with me missy." She spat angrily. "Don't forget who writes your paychecks. You could be out in the streets with the snap of a finger if it wasn't for me."

I rolled my eyes and picked up my fork again.

She focused back on Gen and slapped a stupid grin on her face. "I mean you are a cheerleader now sweetheart. You've probably met so many important people."

"Like the football players, have you meet any guys like I said?" She peered at Gen and pursed her lips.

"Mom I don't want to talk about this right now." She mumbled.

I could tell she was uncomfortable and I was curious. Her mom made it sound like she was forcing her to be with a football player or something.

"So you've never met Will Ashby? I hear he has potential for the NFL. If you have that on your arm, you're secured."
