Maya's POV
Tuesday, March 10th
Weeks later

Turns out that lawyer meant what she said about making a case for me. After loads of paperwork and private meetings here and there, I was successfully compensated for the lack of security protection against Cooper at the courthouse.

And an investigation had opened up and after looking at the security tapes, it was found out that Cooper was given the knife by one of his bodyguards and somehow he'd been notified when I came in.

There was so much to take from that. Someone had been watching me when I was there to tell him. And he was aiming to kill me.

That small thought kept me up at night.

After the settlement and a completed investigation, I'd been given enough money to cover more than just the hospital bill.

It was like my luck had turned around completely.

Because my injury had been considered severe my compensation payment had been $747,188.

I'd nearly passed out when I heard that number.

I thought I'd get a few thousand maybe, but I guess since my accident was posted online and the case had been so public, it only seemed like it made sense.

My name and everything that happened trended on Twitter for longer than I ever thought.

I had no idea what I was going to do with that amount of money.

Thankfully, it had remained a private ordeal. I couldn't handle Aunt Lucy knowing anything.

Both Gen and I remained screening her calls.

I wanted to put it all behind me.

And the money and my future after college was my chance at a new start.

I just didn't know what kind.

God had given me a new chance at life and with enough blessings to keep pushing through. What was I supposed to do now?

Today was one of the weirdest days I'd experienced in a long time.

It had been a little over two weeks since I'd attended class in person and today was my first day of things going back to 'normal'.

Doctor's orders required me to stay home till I was fully healed and at least able to walk without passing out.

Thankfully most of my classes were doable online and my professors had been very understanding.

But there was a major difference between going to school online from my dorm room versus going back to in person lectures.

It was like something was off and I felt it once I left for class this morning.

Aside from the constant sympathy glances that people gave me or the gawking out of pure curiosity, I felt like at every moment someone was watching me.

I didn't feel comfortable driving because the last time I was in a car I was driving to where I'd inevitably be attacked.

And it was nice out so I decided to just walk.

Casey and I walked to class like we always did. The weather was entering into in that weird phase where it was super cold in the morning, but by late afternoon it was more or less chilly. I always carried my coat just in case.

After we parted ways is when I started to notice something was off.

In lecture some students would ask me questions about how I was doing while others just stared at me for almost the whole 50 minutes.
