Maya's POV
Saturday, February 20th
11:03 am
The morning had already exhausted me enough.
Gen came in early to eat breakfast with me and we sat together and watched some Gossip Girl episodes. Watching Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf play will they, won't they was both painful and entertaining.
We were halfway through an episode when an unfamiliar face entered my room.
It was a medium-skin-toned middle-aged woman in a pants suit. She held a briefcase and a cup of coffee in her hands.
Gen and I were more than a little confused when she introduced herself as a defense lawyer.
Janice Mayfair was her name and she wanted to defend me in a lawsuit against the school. She explained that what happened with Cooper was a mistake on behalf of the security department of the courthouse and that I should be compensated for my injuries.
I didn't understand most of the words she was saying or the paperwork she gave me, but in simple terms, I'd have enough money to pay for the hospital bill.
Gen did most of the talking because there was no progress on my throat at all.
She told me that we'd keep in touch and that a statement would be made.
As long as I didn't physically have to go to court, I'd be happy.
After she left, Monica came by to see me.
The trial had ended and I couldn't be happier. Cooper was to be sentenced to up to 18 years in prison for attempted murder and rape.
He'd have his own trial coming up in the next month.
All this information was thrown at me at once and I wasn't fully registering it all.
I couldn't believe it. Things were actually turning out the way they were supposed to.
A past version of myself would almost feel bad for Cooper and what was coming for him, but all I could see now were his eyes. The eyes bore into mine as he pulled the knife out of my abdomen. I had to stop feeling sorry for the people that hurt me. I had to stop blaming myself.
I was given a new chance at life now and I was going to take it.
And before I could even have enough time to fully register what the lawyer had said I got an email from the publishing company.
They decided that it would be best if I didn't come and work from them anymore. The $5,000 was still mine to keep and the short story I wrote would still get published but I couldn't work with them anymore.
I had a feeling it had something to do with how often I'd been in the news recently. It probably was bad for business to have an employee that was a walking casualty waiting to happen.
Everywhere I went, problems seemed to follow me.
It was like the air had been sucked out of me and I was in shock. I couldn't process anything right now.
I was out of a job that I desperately needed. How was going to afford rent in New York City? How was I going to take care of Gen?
What kind of job would I have now?
I was supposed to be focused on healing and now I was panicking about my future. I only had 2 and a half months left of school before I had to figure my shit out.
About an hour later, Aunt Lucy finally showed up.
I'd been expecting her.
"What?" She said with a smirk on her lips. "You're not going to say hello."
