Maya's POV

First day of the Second semester

"There you are. I've been looking for you everywhere." Casey sat down across from me and placed a bag of takeout on the floor. She sat down on the floor next to me.

I'd been sitting in between the shelves of the basement of the library since class got out a couple hours ago.

I needed a place to go where no one was around and it was quiet.

Casey opened the container and put some fries into her mouth.

She nudged my shoulder. "What's up? Why are you down here?"

I sighed and paused my typing. "I've got homework to do already. I have an intro essay due in two days."

It was only the 1st day and there was so much for me to get done.

"Yeah and you can write it in your sleep. What's really going on?" She pressed.

I leaned my head back against the shelf and loosened my twists from it's ponytail.

"Everyone's been whispering about the article and I just needed to find some quiet." I admitted.

"Yeah, I heard some stuff too. Some people are saying you had guts and other people are saying you want attention."

I cursed underneath my breath and closed my computer.

"Some girl called me a bitch on my way to class this morning. Claimed that I was making our school look bad." I grabbed a handful of fries and dipped them in ketchup before eating.

"What bitch? Who is she?" She sat up straighter, getting irritated.

"Forget it. You don't know her."

"Just ignore them. Your article was really good and though it may seem like everyone's mad at you, people will realize the truth when the trial starts."

"It's even trending on Twitter." She said scrolling through her phone.

"I know. Why do you think I'm down here?" I wasn't brave enough to even read any of the tweets about it. It was even being talked about on Sports Center last night.

So much shit was going on.

I already made my Instagram private but that didn't stop the hundreds of DMs from flooding in. Maybe I should've deactivated mine like Monica did.

An open trial was starting next week and Monica had to stay in her dorm for the time being, doing classes online. I wasn't sure if Cooper was allowed to roam free. I was pretty sure he was forced to go home till the trial started.

"I'm antsy about this whole thing." I rubbed my hands on my jeans. "I know that they're going to be investigating it but there' still a chance that-"

"Stop that." She exclaimed. "There's too much evidence not to convict him."

"Yeah, but there's also a lot of money behind this. You can't think that our school wouldn't pull some strings to cover things up."

"Not if the facts and evidence is too solid to refute." We both looked up to see Ben leaning against on of the shelves with a smirk on his face.

"I thought you'd be here 5 minutes ago." Casey said.

"I had to get Gen."

Gen came out from behind him and placed another bag of takeout on the floor.
