Bells ringing and coins hitting metal and drink glasses clinking while people laughed and cheered and some even hollared in defeat. These were the sounds that surrounded Grace and King Dice.
"Alright my dear. Now... I don't suppose you know what your father looks like do you?" He asked, looking down at her as she clung to his arm and he couldn't help but smile. She looked so timid and intimidated by all the noise around her.
"I don't really but... he's about 6 ft tall and he's pretty skinny. His hair is fluffy but the hair line is receding a bit. He has a small scar on his chin and his nose is kinda long, so is his face I guess... is that good?" She explained as she listened to the room, trying to pick up her father's voice from the buzz of other noises.
Dice was surprised at the description, it was actually decent and the scar part would be very helpful.
"My dear that was perfect. We will find him in no time." Dice assured her, patting the hand that she used to hold onto his arm.
She smiled up at him and prayed she wouldn't be able to hear how it sent his heart hammering as he quickly turned and started leading her around to find her father, walking up and down the seemingly endless isles of the slot machine floor until she paused and tilted her head a little. She could have sworn...
"Damnit! Not again! Cheating m-machine!" Yelled her father from just a little ahead of them.
"Daddy?" She called, stepping forward, out of Dice's grip and dice looked up to where the cursing man was. Sure enough he matched her description to a T.
The drunken man looked over and smiled, "grace! My angel baby! Come here and give your old man a hand will ya? This machine is busted." He slurred, slapping his hand on the machine as she stepped up to him.
"Daddy no. No more playing you need to come home now." She said, reaching him and taking his face in her hands.
"Ahh you worry too much baby doll! Daddy isn't gonna spend it all! See? Got five gold coins left! Just for you and me!" He said pulling out four little gold coins and a yellow bottle cap from his pocket and holding them up.
She placed her hand over his and she closed her eyes. Four coins? Four was all they had? This couldn't be happening..."Oh Daddy no... no what have you done...." She whispered, shaking her head as the man leaned on her and she took the money and shoved it in her pocket while she struggled to hold her father up.
Dice bit his lip as he watched the poor girl and the drunken man and he stepped over as the man started singing showtunes while going limp in her arms.
"Miss? Would you like some help? I can hold him far easier than you can." He offered and she 'looked' up towards him and nodded as little tears fell down her face.
"Yes please Mr. Dice. Thank you so much." She said and dive leaned down to let the man shift his weight onto him and he looked away from her eyes. He felt such guilt as her tears fell. That unfortunatly came with the job, working in the casino, you had to watch it destroy people's lives and families all while encouring it to continue.
"Would you like me to call you a taxi?" He asked as he let her hold onto his suite tail while he lead her out of the slot room.
"No... no thank you Mr. Dice. We unfortunatly wouldn't be able to afford a cab. I'll manage him though. I always do." She assured, sniffling a bit, clearly trying not to cry. She looked so lost. "Thank you again so much for all your help. It means the world to me."
He smiled softly and readjusted her dad on his shoulder. "I mean this in 100% honesty, it has been a pleasure to help you... I only wish I could help those tears stop. They don't match your beautiful face."
She blushed a deep red and bowed her head. "Oh.... wow... now d-dont worry about me Mr. Dice. I'll be alright. We both will... somehow." She said as they reached the door and made their way down the steps where they paused at the base of them.
"Do you mind if I ask what the problem is?" He asked, fairly certain it was that her father gambled away the last of their money but he wanted to be sure.
"Well... it's kinda personal but... the bank is taking back out house if we don't pay them by the end of the week and... he's spent everything except for four coins..." She admitted, ashamed that she hadn't stopped him sooner.
Dice bit his lip, "ya know darlin... there might be a way to get that money back. If you're lucky." He said and he watched her head tilt to the side.
"Really? How?"
"Win it back. Inside."
