Dice awoke and turned over in the bed, reaching out sleepily under the sheets to feel for Grace but his fingers were met with only cold emptiness.
He opened his eyes and sat up, looking around and seeing no sign of her and an uneasy feeling settled in his stomach. "Grace? Darling?" He called as he moved from the bed and pulled on his pants.
There was no answer. He checked the whole suite and there was no sign of her except the door was unlocked. Had she left?
He pulled on a wife beater and started down the hall, looking for any sign of her. It wasn't near opening time yet, let alone time for the two of them to be out and about so why would she have left the apartment?
The pit in his stomach only grew worse as he grew closer to the devils office with no sign of her still.
The only place she could be was with the boss and that didn't sit well with dice.
He paused outside the office door, hearing two voices inside but he couldn't make out what they were saying.
He slowly raised his fist to knock on the door and the voices stopped for just a moment before starting again briefly and stopping again.
The door opened a small crack and there stood Grace, a small bit of relief washing over him as he stepped back to let her step out.
"Grace darling what are you doing here? You should be resting after the day you had..."
She bit her lip and bowed her head, trying to hide her face from him, even as his hands gently took her shoulders and rubbed small circles with his thumbs.
"Dice.... I need you to do something for me." She whispered.
He raised an eyebrow but nodded slowly, "of course my love. Anything."
"Will you please....forget me?" She asked softly, tears dripping down her face.
Dice looked down at her, nothing but confusion and concern on his face as he took her face into his hands and he shook his head. "Not in a million years. Grace darling talk to me. What is going on?"
Grace sniffled and placed her hands over his and shook her head. "I... dice please..."
He kissed her forehead and pulled her into his arms, "I'll ask the devil then." He said before leading her inside the office, ignoring her protests.
"Boss. What's going on here? Why is Grace so upset?" He asked firmly.
The devil chuckled as he leaned against his desk.
"Its simple dice. I'm not your boss anymore. I'm hers." He said, his voice dark and amused.
The conversation he had with grace in his kitchen rang in dice's head. "I could have someone give their soul in my place or someone could win it in a gamble for it but I can't do anything to get it back." He had told her.
He turned to look at Grace who bowed her head to keep her gaze from meeting his.
"Grace what did you do?" He asked.
"I... I traded places with you. I wanted...I wanted to help you since all you do is help me..." she explained, sniffling.
"That's right. Grace here wanted to return your kindness dice and in doing so she's agreed to be mine. Her soul is all mine and she's mine to do as I please." The devil said, chuckling.
Dice shook his head. "No! No you can't do this! Let her go!" He demanded, balling his fists and moving a step towards the devil.
The devil smirked and sagged his finger at dice, "tsk tsk dice. Behave yourself or she pays the price." He said, snapping his fingers and grace let out a pain filled yelp as her soul was tugged on, making her crumble to the floor, clutching her chest.
Dice paused and stayed there glaring at the devil. "Why? Why are you doing this? Was I not loyal enough for you? What did I do that you have to take away the woman I love?"
The devil looked off as if in thought or to hide his gaze, "maybe it's not about you dice."
Dice didn't understand. Not about him? "Then what is it?"
"Maybe I want her simply because I want her." The devil admitted.
Grace and dice looked up at the devil. He wanted her because he wanted her? Not to hurt dice? Not as some game to play? Not just to get her soul?
"But...she doesn't want you boss..." dice said gently.
"Exactly. Which is why I'm going to give you a chance to win her back before I wipe her mind and make her want me." The devil said, going back to his smirk and dark gaze.
Dice knelt to help Grace up off the floor, "win her back?"
"Yes indeed. In a game of chance. Much like the one I won your soul in so many years ago." He said snapping his fingers and a table appeared with these cups and a gem stone.
"I won't play that if you're just going to cheat." Dice snapped.
"Ahh see that's the beauty of this set. There's no dealer. It's all done on its own at random so it can't be cheated. It even lifts all the cups after a round so you see the rock no matter where it is." The devil explained, moving to stand at the table. "We will do best 2 out of 3. Winner gets the girl."
