Grace's father stood just outside the kitchen, watching the way King Dice spoke with his daughter, not quite able to hear what was said but the way she smiled... He didn't like it. That was his baby girl. She couldn't possibly be falling for such a con man. Right?
He cleared his throat and stepped into the kitchen, watching the two quickly separate and turn towards him. "Need any help you two?" He asked.
Grace smiled, "no. We just finished. Thanks daddy."
Dice looked between grace and her father, clearly able to see her father wasn't entirely fond of him being around grace. He understood that. There had been several father's to come pointing shot guns at dice over his time working at the casino. All of them angry at dice for, "defiling" their daughters and the like. He had no intention of doing anything to harm Grace though. He wanted to shield her, protect her. He would never hurt her.
Grace turned and picked up a towel from the counter to dry her hands before taking Dice's and leading him towards the stairs. "We'll be upstairs daddy." She said as her father and dice held eye contact until he and grace rounded the corner.
"Ok sweetie." Her father said, trying not to sound tight.
Grace lead him up the stairs and down a short hall to a bedroom. It was simple but clearly a girls room. Lace curtains hung over the window, a soft pink quilt draped neatly over a bed in the corner and a dresser with photos and perfume bottles and a jelwery body with a monogrammed M on the top. "This is my room." Grace said as dice glanced around. "Have a seat."
Dice moved over to sit on the edge of her bed as she sat next to him and opened her eyes, trying to take in the room.
She had been in this room millions of times over her life, it was hers after all, but she had never seen it. It was nicer than she expected, though she didn't really have anything to compare it to. Either way it was pleasing to her eye so that made it nice to her. Her eyes fell on the photos on her dresser and she blinked, one, which was the third from the left and she knew it to be the picture of her mother, caught her eye in particular. The woman in the black and white photo was heavily pregnant and wearing a flowing sundress and sunhat. She was smiling wide as wind blew through her long hair, trying to blow the hat away.
Dice noticed her gaze and followed it, eyeing the pictures, "is that one your mother?" He asked.
Grace nodded slowly. "Yeah. I think so."
"You look just like her. Very beautiful." He said, moving to take Grace's hand in his, weaving his fingers through the tops of hers.
She turned to smile at him, a twing of grief on her face. "I think you're beautiful Mr. King Dice." She said, blushing lightly.
Dice blushed as well. He'd never been called beautiful before. Handsome? sure. But beautiful? never. But it wasn't offensive. This girl had spent her whole life in darkness and he had been the first thing she saw. And she thought he was beautiful. That was a downright compliment of a century.
"You know...you can just call me King. Or even Dice. There's no need to be so formal." He said, picking her hand up and moving it to hold it in both of his.
She smiled as she looked down at how their hands intertwined. "I'd like that...King." she whispered.
He smiled widely and leaned to kiss her forehead. "I should leave you to get some rest but I will be back tomorrow... if that's alright."
She nodded, closing her eyes again, only able to take in so much at a time. "That would be great." She said.
But neither of them moved for the door, they juat kind of stayed there, hand in hand on the edge of her bed, enjoying eachothers calming presence after such a stressful day.
Eventually though Dice did leave and grace crawled into bed, her hand over her heart as she thought of him and the way he made her feel more alive than she ever expected to feel.
