LORAINE

"LORAINE, the doctor and nurses are here." It's Papa. He's with the doctor and nurses, carrying a circular plastic pool. I nodded as I opened my robe.

"Good evening... Feel at home," I said. I went in front of our life-size mirror to see my giant baby bump. It's heavy!

"How many hours have you been laboring, Loraine?" the doctor asked.

"Seventeen hours..." I pouted my lips as I looked at the mirror again.

I can't help but smile. I can imagine myself teaching them how to walk, talk, and eat. I am so excited! Ni hindi ko namalayan ang nagdaang buwan.

They set up the pool in the middle of the living room and filled it with warm water. Yes, I want to give birth at home.

"Are you okay, princess?" Papa came closer and placed his hand on my bump. Nakakainis minsan na bigla-bigla nilang hinahawakan ang tiyan ko. Like, hello? Wala ba kayong sariling t'yan?

"Yeah. It's so heavy." I answered as I sat on the nearby sofa. Geez, even sitting is hard. "Is my sister awake?"

"I think so. They're taking care of Eirene." He grabbed his laptop and called my sister through video call. "Just tell me if you need anything. The nanny will be here tomorrow."

I stared out into the darkness from the window. I don't know what happened after I left the Philippines. All I know is my niece, Eirene, is almost four months old.

"Fuck," I cursed loudly when one of my babies kicked. "It hurts, baby. Calm down. I know you're excited to see Mommy..." I said, slightly shaking.

"What happened?" A male nurse came closer to me.

"My baby just kicked me." I shook my head. I'm just wearing my undergarments and my robe, which I put back on.

"Yes, Brianna, hija, your sister is in labor." I turned to Papa, who was talking to my sister on the laptop. He moved it closer to me.

"Loraine, how are you feeling? Are you okay?" My sister asked. Napangiti ako nang makita ang baby girl nila na natutulog sa braso ni Brie.

"It hurts so bad, but I can handle it." I gripped the sofa tightly as another wave of pain hit me. "Shit!" I screamed.

"Sure ka bang sa tubig ka manganganak? Diba masakit 'yon?" Brie asked again. I calmed myself before answering.

"Parehas lang namang masakit. Mas mabilis lang sa tubig." I suddenly remembered my appearance. "Do I look ugly?" I asked. She laughed.

"Hindi naman... A-about Jackson, gusto mo bang—"

I shook my head.

"Hindi. Ayoko. Ayos lang ako." Mariin kong sabi.

After New Year's, I had planned to go back to France the following week, but I changed my mind. I went home the next day.

I have no idea what happened to Mia and Jackson. Maybe they have a child now. Every time Brie tries to talk about him, I refuse to listen.

He turned his back on me—not just on me but on our children, too.

"Eirene, hi baby..." I smiled as the baby woke up and stared at me. "You're so beautiful..." I stared at the baby who got our eyes. She got Brie's aurora green eyes.

"Sinama ni Dereck si Spiro bumili ng pagkain. Hindi ko papatayin ang tawag, ha? I want to support you kahit na virtual lang." Sambit ni Brie. I nodded and stood up to check my reflection in the mirror again, even though I had taken pictures every month.
