Opening the front door of your apartment, it brought a bright smile to your face to see your sweet boyfriend standing there.

He looked irresistible with his hair a little messy and his big toothy grin, his jeans on and the black shirt you love so much. You couldn't help but lay your hands on his shoulders and give him a loving kiss on his lips; one he happily reciprocated.

"Good afternoon, my love." He smiled and kissed your cheek. You took the cup from his hands and right after, his big hand took ahold of your small one. But his touch was even softer than it usually is, his grip gentle, and the brush of his lips on your knuckles oh so loving.

"I didn't expect for you to come over." You said as you took a seat on your sofa and he plopped down beside you.

"Well, what can I say? I missed you."

You put your cup down and leaned in to give him another kiss. You've been together for almost three months now and usually, he'll melt right into the taste of your lips and the way you move them in perfect sync with his. His arms would wrap around you and he'd pull you onto his lap to hold you closer, tighter.

But today, he was being very gentle and didn't let his hands roam. You pulled away from the kiss but let your lips hover over his. You could see the look of worry in his eyes. The way he bit his lip like he was holding something back from you.

"Are you okay?"

"Are you okay?" He asked and carefully took your hand into his. He gently dropped it to his cheek and kissed across your wrist while his eyes gazed into your own.

"I can see you're hiding something, Ash. I know you better than you think I do."

He sighed and you hung your head, looking from his chest and up to his eyes again.

"Did I do something?'

"No!" He said quickly. "No. No, y/n, you didn't do anything."

"Then what is it?"

He sighed and started to run his fingers along your arm lightly. You relaxed at his soft touch, but tensed when he said,

"One of your friends called me this morning and said I had to meet up with her. She had something she had to share with me that you haven't yet."

You wiggled out of his grip and he didn't dare try to hold you still against him. Not after what he found out. But he did hope you wouldn't run away or try to change the topic. It was an important conversation. One you needed to have... you knew that.

"She told me about your last boyfriend. How he would... hurt you."

You squeezed your eyes shut as the memories came flooding back all at once.

"How he'd do despicable things to you. I-I was disgusted when she told me everything."

He fell silent when he noticed your tense and frightened demeanor. He gently placed his hand on your back and rubbed it in circles.

"I don't tell many people, Ashton. It's not something I'm open about. It left a lot of scars on me... mentally and physically. It took me a long time before I felt like I could trust people again. It was really hard to overcome."

He nodded as your teary eyes met his. He wanted so badly to reach out and wipe your tears away, but he didn't want to frighten you by reaching out so suddenly, especially on such a vulnerable conversation and moment.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you."

"Shh," he comforted. "Don't be sorry. I understand."

"You do?"

"I do." He assured, voice soft as he slowly reached a hand out to cup your cheek. You didn't jump at his touch. If anything, you relaxed. You leaned into his hand and didn't hesitate to let him wipe away the tear sliding down your cheek.

"I care about you, y/n. That's the only reason I met up with your friend. I wasn't trying to invade anything, especially since it was about something you didn't talk to me about. But I worry about you. You mean so much to me. I worry if there have been any moments that you wondered if I'd be like him and I-"

"Ash," you whispered sadly and laid your hands over his. "I never thought that for even a minute. I know you better than that. You're everything I've ever dreamt of having. Someone I've dreamt of falling in love with. I know you're better than that. You're different than him and I know that. Trust me."

He nodded, cracking a smile as he tried to blink away his tears as his heart swelled with an indescribable amount of love for you.

"I... I love you, Ash,"

You'd never seen him smile so big, so bright as he did in that moment. He leaned in to capture your lips with his, pulling you in for the most loving kiss you've ever shared.

"I love you too." He whispered before pecking your lips three times. "I appreciate you opening up to me. I think it was really brave of you to do and it shows me that you trust me, which makes me feel so good to know. I love you a lot, y/n. You're the strongest girl that I know."

You crawled onto his lap and into his arms. You dropped your cheek to his shoulder and smiled to yourself as he put his arms around you to hold you tight. He dropped kisses to your head and let his lips linger for a moment.

"My beautiful girl," he whispered softly. "I'll always keep you safe. I promise."

And you knew then that in his arms is the safest place you could ever be.
