ENOLA GILBERT IS A MESS OF GOOD INTENTIONS. But no matter how hard she tried, everything almost always went wrong. She strikes a match on herself to keep others warm and now the whole goddamn world is on fire. She tried to put it out. She really did. The dam breaks and the water of her sorrow is poured free. She is sorry and she will drown everyone to prove it. Because she was the hero who couldn't save anyone.

Enola looked around the room. Damon and Stefan stared right back with the utmost guilty looks. She didn't understand why they would have felt guilty. Elena wasn't lying there because of them. Elena was lying there because it was the only way to kill Alaric. Elena was waking up because of Meredith. Elena was in transition because of Rebekah. And they were alive because apparently Klaus lied about being the creator of their sire line. Either that or he was somehow still alive—which was impossible. His death was scarred in her mind for all of eternity.

"Enola?" Elena stirred awake.

"I'm right here," Enola reassured, scooting closer to the bed.

"You've been in and out for hours," Stefan informed, leaning against a wall. "You were in a bad accident."

"Oh my god," Elena breathed. "Matt, is he—"

"Alive?" Damon finished, leaning against the wall furthest from his brother. "Ask Stefan, the hero."

"He is fine," Stefan answered, looking away guiltily.

"Thank you," Elena whispered. "I thought I was dead."

"You were," Enola said quietly. "You are."

"I—I don't understand," Elena frowned.

"When you were brought to the hospital before all of this happened, your injuries were worse than anyone knew." Stefan explained. "Meredith Fell made a choice. She used Damon's blood to heal you."

"And when Rebekah ran Matt's truck off the road, you had vampire blood in your system." Damon continued.

"You're in transition," Enola finished.

"No," Elena breathed in denial. "No, no, no, no, no—that was not supposed to happen!"

"Maybe it doesn't have to. I talked to Bonnie." Stefan informed. "She said she is stronger than ever. There might be something she can do to help you."
