ENOLA GILBERT STRUGGLED WITH THINGS THAT ARE AS EASY TO OTHERS AS BREATHING. Like breathing itself. Like answering the phone. Or sending that email she had been meaning to send for weeks. She panics when she is asked to hang out, which doesn't happen often, but when it does she feels a spike in her anxiety. It's hard for her to commit to anything, and when she does, she overthinks it until her brain tells her she has made a mistake, like a rat caught in a maze, trying to find its way out. She didn't know why she was like this.
Enola often wondered why she jumped through a thousand thoughts like hoops. Other times she wondered if her inability to function in the real world is really such a bad thing. She wondered if that is why she spent so much time sheltered in her own imagination. And because she can't live in the real world, she created a world in her head to belong to. And she wondered if the very thing she had always thought was her weakness had been her strength all along. It was called independence. Being able to look after herself. Then again, she hadn't been doing a good job at it. If she was, there would be no dark circles under her eyes. Maybe if she learned to let things go, they wouldn't come back to haunt her in her dreams. Instead of taking the initiative and seeing someone, she preferred to deal with it alone. With a bowl of cereal at the kitchen table.
"To repeat, the animal terrorizing Mystic Falls has been caught." Logan Fell—the news anchor—announced as he referred to the beast who had killed their history teacher at the football game the previous week. Enola wouldn't say that she was sad to hear of Mister Tanner's untimely death considering what a dick he was, but it was rather disheartening to hear.
"Scum ball. Scum bucket." Jenna muttered to herself, glaring at the screen as she set a plate of bacon and eggs down in front of Enola.
"Who are you talking about?" Elena frowned in confusion as she entered the kitchen.
"Him," Jenna scowled, pointing to the television screen.
"The news guy?" Elena wondered, tilting her head to the side.
"Also known as Logan Scum Fell," Jenna reminisced. "Did your mom ever tell you why I moved away from Mystic Falls."
"Oh, no way. You and him?" Elena giggled pointing to the screen. "He's cute."
"He is not cute." Jenna scowled, quickly turning the television off. "There is nothing cute about him."
"What are you doing with that?" Enola muttered, eyeing the box Elena had just set on the kitche table.
