there is a picture on my bulletin board.
in it thirteen children stand, wedged together,
in the center of a candy shop seemingly long forgotten
in the midst of the memories, and in the center stands a girl with a blue dress
and blonde hair and a pink straw hat, smiling
widely at the camera like it's the
best day of her lifeand next to her stands me –
a shoulder ducking behind her like i'm afraid of the
camera, fingers laced together,
with a pink headband in my hair and a small smile
painted on my face – using
my best friend as protection from the worldfast forward five years
and there are thirteen children again,
same store,
older, not necessarily wiser,
showing off bags of candy through
forced smiles that will dissipate into
real joyful ones in the next minuteand still, i am there,
ducking behind her
as i am in life[ 2.5.21 ]
