i rode around the elementary school yesterday
we stopped at the playground: it was the beginning of summer,
but the sky was still a california blue and the air just too hard to breath,
the only wind coming from the breeze our bikes made
as it whispered by, cooling our sweat-soaked shirts.
it wasn't enough.

i saw a lone kona ice truck there.
school got out three hours before,
and yet it stood at the elementary school,
no children rushing to buy the shaved ice... they're all gone, you see,
back at their air-conditioned houses, licking an ice cream or two,
wondering why dad still has to work, it's the last day of school!

i would've bought a shaved ice
i had no money
