Keyla walked slowly towards the opening in the wall to go home. She had just finished her borrowing session and she adjusted the bag full of things she had taken. She was very tired and for this reason, she had decided to take a different and faster route this time, but also more dangerous.
She climbed up to the desk in the room of the human who lived there. Luckily, there was only her in the house and the risk of being discovered was minimal. As soon as she managed to pull herself up on her with her fish hook, she walked to the end of the desk.
She suddenly heard a noise behind her, followed by a very loud one that made her fall to the ground. Gwen had woken up during the night feeling a strange sensation. She looked up to scan her room to then notice something on the desk. She initially thought it was an insect, then, looking closer, she realized it was something humanoid, like a doll.
She came over and took the empty glass she had on the bedside table. She looked at her more and more closely and she seemed much more like a person than a doll.
When she accidentally creaked the wood and saw that Keyla whirled around, she acted on instinct and trapped her in the glass cup.
Keyla fell to the ground hearing the crash of the glass around her and covered her ears, gritting her teeth for the loud noise. When she realized where she was and saw the confused and surprised human in front of her, she widened her eyes in fright.
She felt the walls around her trying to find an exit from that glass cage, but it was all in vain. She felt her tears burn her eyes, it was over, she had been spotted. That human could have done anything to her.
She tried to push her glass, still stirring as a few tears rolled down her face. She was trapped.
"Hey it's okay, I'm not going to hurt you" Gwen whispered seeing the little girl looking at her with terrified eyes. She bit her lip, regretting trapping her, and sat down at the desk to get almost at her same height.
"Calm down... I don't want to do anything to you" she kept telling her and Keyla snuggled against the glass to stay as far away from her as possible. She curled up on herself trembling in fear of her and her sobs shook her body terribly.
"I will take the glass off, okay? You take deep breaths and calm down," she said softly and Keyla peered through her arms to look at Gwen from below.
That was her chance to escape, she would never make it, but she had to try, she just hoped the human would let her go and forget about their encounter.
Gwen slowly raised her glass, releasing Keyla. The borrower staggered to her feet and backed away looking at her with shining, frightened eyes. When Gwen looked away for a moment to put her glass elsewhere, she started running away, homeward.
Gwen's eyes widened as she saw the girl run away in fear. "No, wait!" she exclaimed and instinctively brought her hand closer and grabbed her.
Keyla cried out in fear and pain, the grip was too strong and it was keeping her from breathing properly. Gwen loosened her grip, mentally calling herself stupid, but she kept her fingers around her shaking little body.
She lifted it to bring it in front of her face and Keyla stirred trying to free herself from her grip to no avail. She couldn't compete with a human, she was sure to die now.
As soon as the little girl was in front of her face, Gwen opened her hand making Keyla lie on her palm. Keyla was tempted to jump out, but she would just break her bones and the human would catch her anyway, so it would be useless.
The borrower backed away, her back suddenly hit the human's raised fingers. She was on her palm, she was on her palm!
"Now calm down, breathe deeply" Gwen tried to calm her again. Keyla curled up on herself hoping to defend herself from whatever harm the human wanted to inflict on her.
Gwen approached her free hand and gently stroked her head with her finger. "I won't hurt you," she whispered and Keyla slowly calmed her breath, she also stopped sobbing, but not crying. Was she playing with her? Did she want to deceive her first and then kill her? She didn't understand why she was acting so kindly.
As soon as she was calm enough, Gwen smiled at her. "Very well," she whispered and Keyla pulled her arms out in front of her face to look at her from below.
"P-promise you w-won't h-hurt me?" Keyla asked in a broken voice, amazing Gwen for a moment. The little girl could speak! As much as she was taken back from her voice, she kept her posture and answered her.
"I promise," Gwen said softly and wiped the tears from Keyla's face with a finger, who stiffened for a moment from the surprise. "I'm Gwen, what's your name little one?" she asked smiling tenderly as she looked at her.
"Keyla," she replied simply by lowering her head. "Nice to meet you Keyla, where are you from and what exactly are you?" she asked curious about her, running a finger over her head. Keyla would never admit it but that gesture was relaxing and she liked it. Even though she didn't want to be treated like a pet.
"I'm a borrower and I've lived here forever. We borrow what we need to live and stay hidden from humans... so please don't tell anyone you've seen me!" She finally pleaded with her eyes still shining. Gwen smiled and shook her head.
"I won't," she replied quickly, reassuring the borrower. "So you've always lived here? It must be difficult," she commented as Keyla staggered to get up. "A little," she admitted, managing to balance herself.
"Whenever you need something you can ask me from now on," she said smiling and Keyla's eyes widened as she looked at her.
"Really? I don't want to bother you." She nervously ran a hand over her arm. "You know my parents told me that humans are better not to be trusted," she admitted muttering as she lowered her head. She thought just after that her words could upset the human holding her, and she regretted saying that.
"And they are right, but you can trust me. I would never hurt you, you are so cute" she stroked her head again and Keyla blushed, stepping back embarrassed.
"O-okay ... mh .. can I ask you something to eat?" she looked at her hesitantly from below. She had to admit it had been days since she ate a proper meal, and she was starving. She didn't want to annoy her too much, but she felt too hungry to wait. Gwen nodded, smiling at the little girl glad that she trusted her enough to ask. The human stood up, making Keyla fall on her palm and causing her to yelp and hug one of her fingers to keep balance.
"Oh sorry, next time I'll warn you and I'll be slower," she promised and slowly brought her hand in front of her chest. Keyla kept her finger close, afraid of falling and she observed what the world was like from that angle, it didn't seem all that huge from there.
Gwen did not stop looking at the little girl she had in her hand, she immediately felt a strong protective instinct towards her, now it was her responsibility to keep her safe and away from all harm.
