"I can't believe it!" Cassidy struggled to keep her voice down, knowing that if her mother caught her up so late, she would be in trouble. She laughed as she settled back on the bed, adjusting the phone to her ear.
"Believe me, I had to go around with an eye patch for a month!" Wendy laughed in turn, ending a story from a few years back. The two girls had been talking for two hours now, but it was getting late and they both needed to sleep. Wendy had just told her friend how, some time ago, she had an accident in the high school cafeteria. She was casually walking, holding her tray full of food when someone accidentally hit her in the eye with their tray. Fortunately, it was a minor injury, and she just had to wear an eyepatch for a few months.
"Can we keep talking tomorrow? I'm getting sleepy," Wendy murmured, yawning loudly and making herself more comfortable in her blanket.
Cassidy smiled slightly, finding her sleepy voice adorable. "Okay, watch out for the trays tomorrow, you might get hurt in the other eye," she teased and Wendy snorted, muttering a few complaints.
"I knew I shouldn't have told you," she whined.
Cassidy could hear the pout in her voice. "Okay okay, I promise not to joke about it again..."
Wendy was going to thank her when her friend kept talking.
"...for tonight," Cassidy added, receiving another complaint from the girl on the other end of the phone.
"Meanie," Wendy muttered to herself, making Cassidy giggle.
"Oh, come on. I know you love me," she replied jokingly.
Wendy hesitated a moment before answering. "I do love you..." she murmured in a more serious and low tone.
Cassidy felt her cheeks blush. "Mh... y-yeah, well... I do too!" she replied quickly. Cassidy mentally cursed herself for being so awkward, but Wendy's laugh made her shut up and smile.
"Cass, let me tell you: you are an adorable mess," she said.
The other girl fell silent, biting her lip; it was something she did a lot when she was nervous. "Oh shut up," she mumbled, feeling her face burn right after.
Wendy laughed softly again, before sighing. "Tell me again why we can't video call? I would love to see your face right now-you should be redder than my sweater." Wendy did protest, but she knew she wouldn't push her friend to do something she didn't want to do.
Cassidy was silent for a moment, and she sighed, lowering her gaze. They couldn't video call each other because Cassidy was a bit different than her friend expected, and she couldn't let Wendy find out, not now that their friendship was so strong. Cassidy was a giant and, to humans, she was just a man-eating monster.
Other than the noticeable difference in size between the two species, giants were different in other ways too. Their hair was white, matching the sky more than the ground, and the tips of their ears bore a distinctive dagger-like shape-perhaps to match their predatory canines. Cassidy could have held Wendy in her hands if they ever met. But Wendy would be terrified; she would run away, she would abandon her without a second thought. Cassidy was so tired of people leaving her. She was an only child; her parents considered her a great disappointment because, unlike her peers, she didn't want humans to be mistreated and eaten. On the other hand, Cassidy was intrigued by how the two species were so similar. She was fascinated by humans. Because of this, she was very interested when she got in touch with one of them not so long ago. Wendy had made a post about one of Cassidy's favourite movies on a website she frequented, so the giant inevitably started talking to her, discussing ideas and opinions with her. She had never clicked with someone so quickly. From that moment on, they'd gotten so close that they started talking on the phone almost every night and texting each other all day.
