Edward walked down the kitchen counter after filling his bag with everything he could get. It was Saturday night and the human who lived in that apartment always stayed away until late at night. He loved Saturday for that very reason, he could take many things and on Sundays stay at home all day.

He started walking towards the edge to get off and back to the house, but when he started to hammer the grapple into the wood, he heard the sounds of keys unlocking the apartment door. He turned completely white and stepped back. He started running to a place to hide and in doing so he dropped everything he had in his bag to the ground.

Murmuring constant curses, he came back on his steps and quickly collected everything he had lost. It would have taken weeks to borrow all those things back. He ran to some cups he could hide behind, but he heard the click of the switch and footsteps. He spun around and his eyes met those of the human. The girl was standing at the threshold of the door, she frowned noticing something odd on the counter.

Edward was paralyzed with fear, even though he felt the need to run away as fast as possible. Meredit approached with a confused expression- Something was on her counter, something that looked like a doll, and it was looking at her. She took a few steps, bowing her head curiously, and reached out a hesitant hand.

At that moment, Edward shook himself from his thoughts. No, he couldn't let it all happen without trying to escape. The borrower took a deep breath and just as the girl's fingers were about to touch him, he avoided them and started running towards the end of the shelf. He had to try to get to the hook he left there. The girl's eyes widened in surprise and fright.

When she saw the doll move she knew he wasn't a toy, this was a real boy. With a quick flick of her hand, she tried to stop him from what looked like suicide. Edward still avoided the girl's hand, but slipped and fell forward, falling out of the counter.

The borrower bumped into something soft and grabbed it without thinking too much, trying to avoid falling to certain death. When he opened his eyes that he had been squeezing all the time, Edward realized he was clinging to some fabric. He raised his head and met the girl's still surprised gaze.

He was attached to her shirt, his little hands gripping the cloth tightly. At that point, his fear returned to make its way into his small body. Meredit approached a hesitant hand and placed it under him to keep him from falling. But Edward saw her as a barrier that prevented him from going down.

"What the ... what are you?" She asked, more to herself than to him. With her free hand, she encircled his trembling body and pulled him from her shirt. Edward felt panic making him dizzy. Meredit raised him to her face just to see him better.

"You are so small," she said with a smile approaching her other hand and stroking his hair as if he was some kind of pet. Edward swallowed a lump in his throat with difficulty and tried to move away as much as possible, scared of what she would do to him.

"You look like a doll, yet you are alive" Meredit continued to formulate her hypotheses about him.

"What's your name, little one?" She asked him and the blond couldn't help but give an annoyed look at the nickname. He hated being called that. "E-Edward" He couldn't speak fluently and the girl smiled softly at that, finding him even cuter.

"Aw, I'm Meredit. What are you doing here?" she asked, still stroking her head. The boy was beginning to get nervous. "Could you put me down?" Edward asked ignoring her question. "Why should I? You could get hurt, you are so small and fragile-" She continued and after those words, the boy couldn't take it anymore.

"Listen, I may be even smaller than you, but a human cannot define me as 'fragile'. So think about it before formulating shit like that" he had to sew up his mouth at all costs. His temper would have him killed. The girl widened her eyes, amazed by the change of attitude and the stance of the little guy. She let out a little laugh and raised a hand in surrender.

"Okay Edward, you win," she said and the boy raised his eyebrows surprised by the positive reaction of the girl. He gave an imperceptible sigh of relief and looked at her again. "Now can you put me down?" He asked again hopefully.

The girl placed a finger on her chin as if to think about it. "Will you fall again?" She asked and he shook his head in response. He no longer had a chance to escape, or at least he would have to do something that put him too much at risk. Meredit smiled and placed him on the kitchen counter.

"Wow I've never seen someone like you. Where do you live? Do you have a name? Do you live in small houses in the middle of the woods? But most of all, you must be starving!" she began to speak quickly without giving Edward time to answer her. The girl approached him smiling excitedly.

"Would you like to eat some midnight doughnuts?" She asked and reached out a hand to him. Edward stepped back and shook his head.

"I don't-" he didn't finish speaking, that Meredit grabbed him with her huge hand. "Of course you want to, you probably never tasted one" she continued and Edward felt his eyes burn with tears of anger that threatened to wrinkle his face.

"Enough! Even if you are bigger than me doesn't mean that you can treat me like this! You're depriving me of my rights, idiot of a giant!" he burst out red with anger and fidgeted trying to free himself from the fingers that wrapped him, in vain.

The girl understood only then what she was doing. The little blond was right. She looked down in regret and slowly repositioned him on the table. "You're right, I ... I'm sorry" she sighed and Edward looked at her surprised. Did she apologize?

There was a moment of silence, in which the borrower adjusted his clothes and looked away, calming his racing heartbeat. "Can we start over?" Meredit asked with a hopeful tone, looking at him with a small smile. Edward widened his eyes. After a moment of uncertainty, he nodded and the girl smiled.

"Nice to meet you, Edward, I'm Meredit. Would you like to eat some midnight doughnuts with me?" she asked slowly and gently. The boy smiled, understanding that the girl had understood her mistake.

"I would like that very much" he answered, a bit shyly, but taking a step towards her. He always wanted to taste doughnuts.
