Hannah watched curiously as Megan drew. The borrower liked to sit on the bookcase, hidden behind the books, and watch the human focus on her projects. They looked so incredible that Hanna had felt inspired and she began to draw as well.

That day, the borrower intended to retrieve a new pencil lead since she had finished her old one. It wasn't a difficult task; she just had to wait for Megan to leave the house. Then, when completely alone, she just needed to reach the desk and break off the tip of one of the pencils. It was big enough to last the borrower a long time, and Megan was unlikely to notice a broken lead.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Megan looked at her watch and jumped out of her chair. Her fast movements made the borrower panic, but then she realised the human was just gathering her things because she was late for something.

Megan got up from her desk and wrote some messages on her cell phone. Then, the human put on her coat and left her room.

Finally, Hannah had the opportunity she was waiting for. The borrower climbed down the bookcase using the string she had already prepared. She walked along the window sill and jumped down onto the desk. It didn't take her long; she was getting quite agile with time and practice. She walked over to the abandoned pencil and took a moment to look at the drawing that Megan had left there. It was a portrait of a girl, and it was very realistic. She ran her hand over the paper with a sigh. She wished she could be good like her; if only she could ask the human to teach her some techniques. She wouldn't admit it, but she admired the human's skills a lot.

She shook herself out of her thoughts, as she returned her focus on the pencil next to her. With a few attempts, she managed to break the tip and she put it in her bag, smiling victoriously. Suddenly, she heard the sound of fast footsteps approaching, and that made her pale from head to toe. Why was Megan back so soon? Hannah usually waited to be sure the human was out of the house, but she had left so quickly she was sure she wouldn't have time to go back to her room.

Megan walked into the room, halfway remembering that she had forgotten the book she had to bring back to her friend. As she entered the room and searched for the book, she frowned when her gaze landed on the small figure on the desk.

Hannah felt shivers run through her body as she became paralysed under the gaze of two green eyes.

Megan, on the other hand, was very confused: what was it? A doll? An action figure?

When the borrower realised how close the human was and how easily she could grab her and hurt her, she woke from her trance. She had to run away. But to where?

She bolted towards the window, hearing a gasp from the human, who didn't expect the doll to move. Hannah ran as fast as she could, but her legs trembled and she slipped, falling forward. She felt her stomach twist as she fell towards emptiness. She closed her eyes, waiting to hit the hard, cold floor. What a ridiculous death, she thought as she felt time slow down around her. She had just started to get past her fear of humans and had been trying to learn from them. Her parents had warned her about it: being close to humans was deadly. But she didn't listen, of course. She just had to go against all her parents' teachings and do what she wanted to do.

She had been so stupid.

Hannah hit something that softened her fall and she found herself sliding further and further down. Only then did she realise she wasn't dead. She opened her eyes and squirmed, trying to get free of her prison. She wasn't sure what had happened-she just knew that she couldn't breathe and was surrounded by darkness. She had ended up in the bin full of crumpled papers, mostly drawings Megan had thrown away.
