"Will I see you tomorrow?" Nyx asked with a tentative voice. She was too shy to make eye-contact, opting instead to stare at the floor.

Merida smiled warmly at the sight; the brunette was adorable. Nyx had always been a bit quiet and awkward but, whenever she felt comfortable enough, her true self shined through. Merida had tried her best to make it happen as much as possible.

"Same place, same hour," Merida promised, trying to catch the borrower's gaze.

Nyx smiled brightly at her words and waited for her friend to leave.

Merida turned around and took a few steps towards the entrance of the vent, before stopping. She didn't look back, deciding against showing her friend how nervous she was. "Nyx, you trust me... right?" she asked, her tone of voice suddenly becoming more serious.

After being alone for years, Nyx had met Merida while she was exploring the vents of the building. She was just like Nyx: all alone and trying to survive by any means possible. Nyx learned that Merida lived in the apartment next to hers and, since their first meeting, they had been borrowing together. Thanks to Merida, she had managed to improve her little shelter hidden inside the walls. The redhead was incredibly smart and could retrieve anything from the human in her apartment. The two girls had been friends for a few months and Nyx already trusted her more than her own family, whom had left a year prior. They had said that she wasn't strong enough to survive on her own, that she was simply a burden. Nyx almost wished to show them how much better she had gotten at borrowing—even better than her jerk of a brother!

The borrower looked at Merida, tilting her head to the side in confusion. She wondered why her friend's behaviour had changed so much. Had she done something to upset her? "Of course I do!" she answered without missing a beat, hoping she would look as sincere as she actually felt.

Merida had started to think about revealing her secret almost a week prior. After their typical patrol, Nyx had seemed quieter than usual. Merida noticed her odd behaviour, but didn't mention anything. They both had to focus on their task, and then maybe discuss personal matters. She never wanted to put Nyx in danger.

At the end of the day, Nyx had gathered the courage to voice her thoughts. "I was thinking... We have been borrowing together for a while now. You usually let me take most of the things we get—which is not really fair—and you always need to walk so much just to reach my shelter. I just... uhm..." The little borrower started to ramble, her cheeks heating up at the thought of her suggestion. She had rehearsed a whole speech, but had forgotten everything she had prepared.

Merida wished she could do something to help her calm down, but she was too busy panicking about what the borrower was saying. She had already guessed her request.

"I just thought that we could... like... move in together?"

Silence had followed those words, Merida could still remember the feeling of her heart sinking to her stomach. "How about we discuss that in a couple of weeks?" she decided to suggest, hoping to buy some time to think of a plan. But, when she saw the pain in Nyx's eyes, she took a step closer, closing the gap between them.

"Nyx, I would love to live with you. That would be perfect," she said, reaching out to grab her hand. "I just need some time to... resolve some matters, that's all."

The borrower seemed comforted by Merida's words and her gestures, even if she was still a bit disappointed.

Merida couldn't keep herself from hugging Nyx as tight as possible, hoping to make her understand how sorry she felt for her response.
