Irene spent the night looking for useful things she would need all week. It was getting more and more difficult every day to take care of her little brother, but she couldn't abandon him. He was the only one left of the family.

She was returning home after recovering less than she expected. With a sigh, she walked towards the small opening that was behind the closet of the room of the only human who lived there. A glint in the darkness of the room caught her attention. She walked over to then notice a large piece of cheese that appeared to have been abandoned.

She thought that, finally, luck was by her side, and she started pulling it off. When she heard the click of something she pushed herself away quickly in fear. She didn't make it, the mousetrap trapped her arm and she let out a cry of pain.

She covered her mouth with her free hand as she tried to hold back more screams from the unbearable pain she felt. She tried in every way to free herself.

She spent hours in that position, she wasn't able to escape, but she couldn't stay there and leave her brother alone. He would never survive alone.

By now the sun had risen and the human's alarm went off, startling Irene and causing her to scream out of surprise.

Unfortunately for her, her trap was visible in the morning light and so she tried hard to get her arm out, causing more pain. She couldn't break free and the human would surely see her. She stirred with tears in her eyes and then heard the human sit on the edge of the mattress and yawn.

Noticing small movements out of the corner of her eye, the human turned to the mousetrap and stood still, meeting two terrified eyes.

She furrowed her eyebrows and stood up, approaching with curiosity and confusion. "What the hell ...?"

Irene looked at the girl, ten times bigger than her and terrifying. She would have killed her, or worse. She trembled as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Lena crouched down to get a better look at what the mousetrap had trapped. She realized that it looked like a doll, but soon understood it was alive. She was terrified to death and Lena almost felt pain for her as she noticed her arm full of marks and bruises.

Irene saw the human approach her hand and screamed in fright as she curled up and covered her face with her free arm. She waited for her to hurt her, but the only thing she felt was the pressure on her arm disappears.

"There you go" the girl murmured, before placing the trap elsewhere. Irene stepped back holding her aching arm. But she was more focused on looking at the human and being scared of her, than worrying about the pain.

Irene backed away in fear until her back met the wall. Her legs seemed to be made of jelly and she trembled as the human returned her gaze to her. Her head was constantly screaming at her to run away and get to safety, but she couldn't.

"It must be broken" Lena commented in a low voice, referring to her arm. Irene looked down at her arm for a moment and then raised it. "Maybe I have something to help you" she murmured before getting up and scare Irene. The borrower looked around for an escape route, but the crack was right where the human was rummaging in a drawer.

She backed away and hid behind the nightstand in fear. She just hoped the human would pretend nothing happened, that Lena would think she saw nothing and it was just her immagination.

When Lena came back and crouched, she looked at the floor confused. The little girl must have been really scared, Lena thought immediately. However, she assumed she wasn't too far away.

"You don't have to hide ... I'm not going to hurt you," she said while holding the bandages she got from her in her hand. Lena tried to get closer to her when she didn't hear a response.

As she got closer to the nightstand, she could finally catch a glimpse of the borrower. Irene let out a scream as she saw the human approaching and looking for her.

Lena's eyes widened at her scream, she was deeply terrified of her.

"I brought you some bandages for the arm, to help you" Lena explained by placing the bandages next to her and moving her hand away again to not scare her further.

Irene looked suspiciously at the human as Lena sat cross-legged on the floor. The borrower approached hesitantly and took the bandages before she quickly began to bandage her arm. She felt the curious look of the human on her and this made her shiver.

As soon as she finished she looked at the girl who smiled at her. "T-thanks" she muttered loud enough to be heard.

"So you know how to talk!" the human exclaimed surprised and the girl looked down, nodding with embarrassment. "Do you need anything?" Lena asked her and the girl shook her head quickly backing away.

"Can I ... Uhm... go?" she asked uncertainly, she didn't want to stay a moment longer in that situation. She felt so helpless, the human could have done anything to her.

Lena was surprised and tilted her head. She wanted her to stay longer, but she couldn't force her.

"Of course! If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask" she said watching the borrower walking briskly towards the opening.

Irene had been seen, she would have to move house, start over, but the human didn't seem willing to hurt her. With a thousand thoughts on her mind, she reached home and hugged her little brother tightly.

The boy cried in her arms, he was scared his sister would never come back.

Irene reassured him and decided that the best way to survive was to stay there. Finding a new home was too risky.
