Aiden closed the door behind him with a weary sigh and slumped onto the bed face up looking at the ceiling. Although he tried to focus on school or his friends, he began, as always in that last period, to think about his future.
He had been diagnosed with cancer that was impossible to cure, he would die in less than a year, but he still kept it hidden from everyone but his family. He took off his shoes and settled on the bed, resting his head on the pillow.
When he was with the others, he constantly thought that soon it would all be over, that he would have to leave them even before finishing high school. And that sucked. He felt his eyes burn and let out a few silent tears.
"Aiden?" a whisper was heard, faint but clear and high enough to raise the boy from his thoughts. Aiden frowned as he quickly sat up and wiped his face with one hand. But when he heard nothing he thought he had hallucinated.
"Aiden" that time the voice was more confident and the boy was sure he heard it coming from his right. He looked into the bookcase and tilted his head in confusion. He got up from his bed and walked over. He noticed a small movement and something hiding behind a book.
The boy stopped a little frightened. Could it be an insect? A mouse? A demonic spirit who wanted to kill him?
Well, I have to die anyway...
He thought wryly and shook his head back to reality. Sana swallowed a lump in her throat and peered over the book to find the boy standing not far from her.
"H-Hi," she said raising a hand greeting him. Aiden widened his eyes and raised a hand. "Hi?" he said a little shocked. Was she some kind of robot?
"Uhm .. I-I.." Sana began to stammer nervously under Aiden's incredulous gaze. The human understood she was struggling and he gave her a small smile. "Wait, take a deep breath, think about what to say, and then talk. It's okay, take your time" she smiled gratefully at those words.
Sana nodded, she took a deep breath closing her eyes, and opened them again pointing them in those of the human.
"My name is Sana and I am a borrower who lives here. You don't know me because borrowers usually stay hidden and don't show themselves. Except ..." she stopped for a moment, running a hand on her arm nervously.
"I've known you and your family for many years now, and knowing that you don't have much left, I wanted at least to meet you in person ..." she tried to explain, lowering her eyes. Sana didn't even know why she felt the need to be seen. She could have just kept looking over him, staying safe. But what pushed her to meet him was the thought of seeing him cry alone and not being able to console him in some way.
"Wow, so you are like a living doll?" he asked her curiously getting closer. "I'm not a toy," Sana pointed out and shook her head. When she suddenly saw his hand approach her, her eyes widened in fear and she hid behind the books, even though it would be nothing for the human to take her from there too.
"Oh, sorry, I didn't want to scare you" the boy admitted taking away his hand. "It's just strange, people like you exist only in books," he said and moved slightly away from the library. Sana peeked again, regaining her courage.
"I-I'd rather you didn't touch me like that," she said shyly, lowering her head. "Okay, I promise not to do it again," he said smiling and raising his hands innocently. Sana looked up and saw his contagious smile. She smiled too and walked over again.
"Would you like to have lunch with me?" Aiden asked gently and the borrower tilted her head to the side. "Don't you eat with your family?" the boy shook his head in response.
"They are too overwhelming lately. I'm going to get some food and I'll be back" he warned her before turning and leaving the room. Sana let out a deep sigh as soon as she was alone. That was what she wanted, wasn't it? Why was she so scared? Well, Aiden was a human after all.
When Aiden returned he found her in the same spot as before. He set the tray with the sandwich and a bowl of strawberries on the bed and looked at her.
"Can you reach the bed by yourself?" he asked her not wanting to immediately think about the possibility of grabbing her. Sana looked at him and nodded with conviction and then disappeared behind the books.
With her hook, she reached the floor easily. Meanwhile, Aiden positioned himself cross-legged on the bed, kicking off his shoes. He noticed Sana appear from behind the bookcase and walk towards the bed.
She climbed on the sheets and joined the boy a little intimidated by his height.
"How long have you been living here?" He asked curiously as he cut the sandwich into smaller pieces. Sana sat down across from him on the other side of the tray. "Since I was born, my family and I lived here ... but three years ago they abandoned me," she said lowering her tone and head to her last words. Aiden's eyes widened and she placed the food in front of her.
"I'm sorry," he said simply, not knowing what else to tell her. "It's not your fault, besides, I can live on my own and stay hidden," she said with a smile before starting to eat her piece. "Well, considering that no one ever saw you, that's true," he credited her assertion and chuckled. Sana smiled and so they began to talk quietly, getting to know each other better.
After a while, Aiden put the tray aside, He then laid down on the bed. "Sana... I would like to ask you something" he said and the borrower tilted her head, approaching him hesitantly. She climbed up onto the pillow and looked at his face.
"When I leave, don't forget about me," he said turning to look at her, and Sana's eyes widened in surprise. "Okay Aiden, I won't forget you," she said smiling and the boy brought a fist.
"Thank you, little one," he said and Sana hit the finger of the hand that was next to her. "Don't call me that" she pointed out and the boy chuckled continuing to tease her.
