The sound of keys inserted in the lock, the creaking of the front door, and footsteps woke Alexa.

She opened her eyes slowly, she was laying on the soft sheet and surrounded by warmth and a familiar scent. When she realized that the noises that had awakened her must have been Grace's parents, her fear immediately hit her. Not that she didn't trust her parents they got along very well.

Alexa practically lived alone, her father always on a business trip, so she spent a lot of time in that house, she always felt welcome. But this time she was different, this time she knew that if she didn't want to go through other unpleasant situations, she had to stay hidden.

She just hoped Grace didn't want to show her to them, like some newly discovered rare species or something. A shiver hit her back, no, Grace would never do that. She repeated the last sentence in her head as she heard the sound of voices and other footsteps.

She couldn't figure out whether or not they wanted to go into Grace's room, but she still found herself getting as close as possible to her best friend's hand, trembling.

She curled up hiding completely behind her fingers and covered herself with her blankets. Then the worst happened: the door opened and she didn't dare to look.

"Grace?" Alexa put her hands on her ears, the volume of the woman's voice was too high. The blonde after a while moved slightly, and for a moment Alexa thought she was going to squeeze her even more, crushing her. But Grace loosened her grip feeling sleepy and yawned only slightly opening one eye.

"Uhm?" she murmured as the woman moved closer to the bed. Alexa jumped and felt her heart pound with fear. She felt the mattress drop slightly, the woman must have sat on the edge.

"I wanted to tell you that we are back, safe and sound, from grandma's house," she said and Grace yawned loudly trying to focus and wake up.

When she felt a slight tremor in her hand, she frowned in confusion.

Grace remembered everything about last night, and she knew what was causing those tremors.

She gasped softly, widening her eyes and covering Alexa's shaking little body with both hands. She tried to make her gesture seem as natural as possible as she pulled her close to her chest and hid her.

"I wouldn't have bet on it" she tried to joke it as she usually did to not seem suspicious. "Alexa has fun?"

At that question, she whitened completely opening her mouth to speak but finding herself voiceless. The woman frowned at her.

"Didn't she come here last night?" she asked confused and Grace nodded slightly. "Oh yes right, yes she came over. We watched a movie and ate pizza, nothing else" she said quickly and then pretended to yawn.

"It's like... six in the morning, I'm on vacation and I want to sleep .." she looked at the woman who was still a little confused. Her mother sighed and shrugged. "Don't sleep too much!" she said as she got up and left the room closing the door.

Alexa jumped at the loud sound of the door being closed and she tried to press her hands as hard as possible to her ears to hear nothing. She was hidden in Grace's hands and she hoped to stay there forever. When her best friend started to open her hands, the light slowly began to enter that little shelter. She tried to get used to it.
