During dinner, my phone starts to ring and I look at it. 'Office' flashes across the screen.
What the hell is going on in the office and why are they calling me while I'm on holidays? I just hope it's nothing important.
Looking over at Eliza I say. "Excuse me, I need to take this call." I push away from the table and start to walk away. Putting the phone up to my ear I say.
Me: Hello, it's Austin.
Office: Hey, Austin. It's Darla. I know you're supposed to be on holidays, but a case has been pushed forward. It will be the day after you return from your one month holiday.
Shit, this isn't good. Why on earth are they doing this?
Me: Why did they push this forward?
Darla: Because the Collins Family are pushing for a hung jury, so they can get away with what they've been doing for a long time.
A hung jury is my favourite type of trial, but it's harder when the prosecutor tries to get the hearing made up and again. It takes a lot more work for me to do.
Me: since you're heading my way. Just come to my parent's place and drop all the paperwork off there. I'll put some time in to do it.
Darla: Great, I hope I didn't interrupt something important.
Me: I was having dinner with an ex and it was going perfectly until you interrupted it, but as lawyers, our work comes first as well.
Darla: I'll let you get back to the date. Text me your address and I'll see you on the weekend.
Me: Sounds good. Bye, Darla.
Darla: Bye, Austin.
Hanging up the phone I walk back to the VIP area and sit across from Eliza.
She looks up from her phone and says. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, it was just the office. One of my cases have been pushed forward and the trial starts the day after I get back to the city."
"Are you sure that's going to give you enough time to run through everything you need for the trial?"
Look at her. She's concerned about my case. I wonder if she knows about the one I took on for her sisters boss?
"It will. Some of my workmates are heading this way over the weekend and they are going to drop off the papers for me."
"Okay, so how is work going?"
A smile spreads across my face. "It's going good. I enjoy being a Lawyer, but sometimes it sucks. Especially, when you see an innocent person go to jail and you have to try harder to get them out and produce evidence that wasn't seen before. What about you?"
"I've been doing office things for Dad. Helping Mom and keeping the house in order since Mom can't do too much."
"Can you forgive me for not being here when you needed me?"
"I forgave you a long time ago, Austin. You shattered my heart when you stopped returning my calls, but I had to move on."
"I'm sorry about that, Eliza. Have you been on holiday's anywhere?"
"Not, really. The furthest I've been is to the City. What about you?"
Reaching across the table I take her hand in mine. "I've been all over the place. Some with work and others have been with my ex-girlfriend, while she's done some photoshoots."
