At the end of the month, I head into the office with my briefcase. Ready to face the music of my failed drug test.
When I walk towards my room people are smiling and saying. "Good morning," to me.
It's like I haven't been around for a long time.
Lucille stops next to me and says. "Hey, Austin. How was your holiday?"
I wasn't on holidays. What did Clara do?
Clara enters the hall and when she sees me she starts walking in the other direction.
Fuck, no. She's not going to get away with what happened.
She slips into one of the partner's office and stays there until I give up.
Making my way to the office I slam my case on the desk.
This is getting out of control. How the hell did Casey get to Clara? She shouldn't know people in my office.
The door to the office opens and one of the partners stands in front of my desk. He has his arms crossed. "Hello, Austin. We heard you had a family emergency and had to leave the case with someone else to take over. We didn't win that case. If you were here we would have."
Of course, we would have won it, but Clara ruined it all.
"Sir, there's something I need to tell you that's important."
He moves over to the seat across from me. "What's that."
"We had a drug test over six weeks ago and Clara called me with the results. She told me I failed it and then said the partners were busy for six weeks and I was suspended until a hearing could be had."
He shakes his head. "This isn't good. I'll have to talk to the partners about this. We're going to figure out how to get you the promotion you deserve. You should have called me the day after you got word from Clara. I didn't know she'd do something like this."
Placing my hand on the table I look the partner in the eye and say. "Ever since she got the promotion she's been making people do all sorts of things for her and it's been making some of our lives a complete living hell."
"I'm sorry, Austin. We made this mistake by choosing her over you, but we're going to make it up to you by demoting her. A suspension could also be on the way too."
"Sounds good. Do you have any cases you need me on?"
Just then Clara walks through the door holding a file. She stops when she sees the partner sitting in a chair opposite me. "Sir, I didn't see you there. I'm here just to give Austin the new case that's been brought to the office."
Pulling my phone out from my pocket I look for the recorder and record things that are about to be said.
Clara's going down at the partner meeting that we've both been asked to attend.
He looks over at Clara and says. "There's a meeting at 2 pm. We need you on it, Clara." His attention turns back to me and he adds. "You too, Austin. He stands up walks out of the office."
Clara puts the file on my desk and looks at me. "What did you tell him?"
Crossing my arms across my chest. I lie through my ass. "Nothing, why would you think I said something?"
She moves over to the vacant chair and sits across from me. She has a huge smile on her face. Like she's got something on me, which she doesn't. "Because people have probably told you that I told them you were on holidays instead of the suspension I lied to you about. Do you wanna know who called me with faking the drug test."
