After grabbing everything we need for dinner Mom and I walk over to the checkout and place our stuff on the belt. The woman at the checkout smiles at us and says. "Good morning. How are you?"
Mom smiles at her. "Hey, Jenny. We're good." She touches my arm. "Do you remember my son, Austin?"
She looks away from the groceries she's scanning. "Yes, I remember. You've gotten handsome since the last time I saw you and you've got muscles. Which is something new."
I had muscles when I was in school, but they're bigger now from the push-ups I do every morning.
"Thanks, how you're daughter, Tori doing? I didn't see her at the reunion the other night."
A sad look crosses her face. "My daughter died in a car crash a couple of years ago with her husband. A drunk driver crashed j to their vehicle."
"I'm so sorry."
"It's alright. I shouldn't have expected you to know about it. After all, everyone here knows that you're a big-time lawyer in New York who doesn't want anything to do with the community that helped shape him."
Well, this lady isn't holding anything back about what she thinks of me.
Mom shifts uncomfortably on her feet. She doesn't say anything to make me feel better and that's when I realise that I haven't been the best to the people back at home.
I hate been happening in the city is the only thing I've concerned myself with.
When all the groceries have been rung up I pay for the stuff and walk out with Mom.
She looks over at me and says. "She does have a point about you not being the type of person we expected. Especially, coming out of this tight-knit community. Did you know that most of the people from your school come back from time to time to check up on there loved ones?"
"Mom, I promise from now on things will change. I have a great girl by my side and she'll make sure that we'll come home more often."
"What do you mean by she'll make you come home more often?"
A smile spreads across my face. "I'm taking Eliza to the city with me. I buying a house for us to live in and we're going to start a family too. I want to marry that girl as soon as she'll say 'yes,' to me, but having her move on with me will be the first step of that happening."
Mom hugs me. "I'm glad she's going to move in with you when you go back to the city. Does that mean I'll be able to come by and see you?"
"Yes, you'll always be welcomed to the house. When we have kids I'd like for you to stay longer until we get the hang of things."
"I'm sure Eliza would prefer her mother to be there and not me. However, she might want me there because while you've been gone she has come by without being asked to. That girl will always be part of the family for a long time. Even if things don't work out for you."
"Mom," I scold. "Don't jinx us."
She shakes her head. "I'm sorry." Looking at the stuff in my hands. "We should get that home. I have a lot of cooking to do before dinner is ready for tonight."
We walk to the car and I open the trunk. Putting the stuff inside I turn towards Mom and say. "I've got the door." Opening the for her I wait as she climbs inside.
She touches my chest and says. "You're a good boy, Austin. Your father taught you how to treat a woman."
Except for when it comes to Casey. I'd rather her open things for herself. With Eliza, I open the doors because she deserves to be treated well.
Closing the door to the car I round it and climb into the driver's seat. Starting the car I reverse out of the parking spot and head in the direction of home.
Along the way home there's a red sports car that flies past us and on their tail is the local police. They swerve in and out of the traffic, trying to catch up to the owner of the car.
"We've never had something like this happen before. Those cops were driving dangerously. I hope they don't cause an accident along the way."
If they do I hope it's not close to our house. I'd hate to see someone hurt because of this pursuit.
As we continue on our way home Mim's phone starts to ring and she pulls it out of her pocket. "It's your father." She says before putting the call on loudspeaker.
Mom: Hey, Honey. What do you need?
Dad: I was wondering if you're on your way home?
Mom: I am. Why?
Dad: There's a high-speed race happening and the police helicopter is doing a lap around the house.
Mom: Do you know what's happening?
Dad: Chase Bank just got robbed and other things are going on close to home.
Me: Like what?
Dad: The Roswell's youngest disappeared from her backyard and no one has seen her since.
That's terrible that she's gone missing. I'll join the search once I get home.
Mom: I hope they find, Tracey. That girl was a miracle to that family.
Dad: Peter and Jolene are at the house. They didn't know who else it turns to after their daughter went missing. Everyone knows to come to our place if they find her.
Mom: That's good. Is Peter going to join the search?
Dad: He's waiting for me.
Mom: We're about five minutes away. See you soon.
Mom hangs up the phone and puts it in her bag. She leans back against the seat and looks out the window.
"Are you okay, Mom?"
She shakes her head. "No, that little girl has been coming over to our place a lot after her older siblings moved out. I babysit her every week so her parents can have a date night. It makes me want to have my Grandkids close by."
"They'll be close to you before you know it, Mom."
Especially, since I want to start a family with Eliza.
It doesn't take too long before I'm pulling the car into the driveway of my parent's place.
Climbing out of the car I walk around it and open the door for Mom. "I'll grab the groceries and meet you inside."
Mom walks to the front door and she opens it.
Grabbing the groceries out of the trunk I take it to the house. When I walk through the front door I see a couple holding hands and the woman is crying.
She lets go of him and says. "Don't come home until you find our daughter."
Dad and the guy walk out the front door.
I place the groceries on the kitchen table and turn towards Mom. "I'll help look for the girl. Do you have a current picture of her?"
"Yes," the woman goes through her phone and stops at a recent one and I look at it.
"Thanks," I walk out the door and join the search.
