"What a storm!" Jane snapped to herself as she quickly walked home, followed by her dog. She was walking her dog when out of nowhere it started to rain terribly. One of her usual lucky moments, the girl thought wryly to herself.
She was walking down the sidewalk, trying her best to be as quick as possible. Suddenly, her dog started pulling her into an alley, barking rapidly. Jane sighed, rolling her eyes and knowing immediately her dog had spotted a cat. Bella hated cats.
"Bella, we really don't have time for cats," she blurted out impatiently as she tried to pull the dog back. But when she took a closer look into the alley to see what the dog was barking at, she almost thought she was hallucinating.
Jane started approaching with slow steps, holding the dog steady alongside her while she focused on the small figure on the ground. Could it be a toy?
Ronnie jumped in fear at the loud sound of a dog barking. When she saw it getting very close to her, she thought she was going to die. However, the dog had stopped as if it was being held back by something ... or rather someone.
The little borrower froze as her blue eyes met the dark brown ones of a human. A girl, in her twenties, with curly short hair. Ronnie could now only look at her, the fear had frozen her in place. Suddenly, the realisation hit her like a truck and she knew that she had to move away if she didn't want to end up in big trouble.
She had broken the first rule of borrowing, never to be seen by humans. Those gigantic creatures were unaware of their existence, or at least that's what she was told. Borrowers usually live in the walls of humans' houses, and during the night they borrow the bare minimum to survive. Ronnie had lived alone for some years now, she had lost her family and she had to leave her previous shelter. Since then, she had survived on her own, looking for something to eat in the garbage left in the alleys. The human in front of her seemed to pity her, but Ronnie knew that humans were best not to be trusted.
So, with thoughts of what terrible things the human could have done to her, she ran behind the bin she was leaning against to hide and hoping that the girl would just leave. Unfortunately, she had recently cut her leg fairly lightly with a shard of glass from a bottle abandoned nearby. Her blood kept dripping down her leg ending up on the ground and she tried not to move too much, feeling the pain by just putting her foot on the ground. She limped behind the bin, hiding and taking deep breaths to calm herself. The bin was positioned obliquely to the wall, it was like a dead end and she prayed that she would be saved anyway.
Jane's eyes widened as she noticed that what looked like a doll began to move. Was she ... alive? How was this possible?
She tried to figure out whether or not she had seen what she had seen and with a few steps she approached the bin, managing to catch a glimpse of the little doll hiding behind the bin. She noticed stains of what looked like blood on the ground.
Yes, she was real. Besides, she was hurt. Jane got close enough to see the girl huddled against the bin, in the space between it and the wall.
"Hey, uh... I don't know who you are but you seem to need help" she said as the rain continued to pour, getting them both drenched. Ronnie shivered both from the cold of the drops falling from the sky and terror. That human would easily be able to take her and do with her what she wanted.
"Don't be afraid of me, my dog and I won't do anything to you" she tried to calm her with a reassuring smile.
Ronnie moved tentatively to the edge of the bin and peeked a little over the back of it to see that the girl had crouched down and was holding the dog next to her, her tail wagging frantically. Ronnie wanted her to go away and leave her there, maybe to bleed to death in the cold.
