Ollie's parents were arguing.
And he had no idea why.
He sat in the backseat of their rusty pickup truck, absentmindedly flipping through a textbook from school. Most thirteen (almost fourteen) year olds walk home from school, but apparently today they were going somewhere, so they picked him up. He was slightly pissed off to say the least, since the two adults kept speaking in hushed tones, and he hated not knowing what was going on.
"Where are we going?" He asked for what felt like the millionth time in the past ten minutes. His legs were cramped in the backseat, and he thought that since he was taller than his mom, he should be allowed to sit in the front seat with his dad. "I'm hungry."
"You're always hungry." Audrey teased, although her smile looked a little too forced for Ollie's liking when she shot her husband, Raymond Sanchez, a tense look.
Ray glanced back at his son, who had resorted to uncomfortably propping his legs up on the seat beside him, trying to shove his backpack in the seat behind him. Ray looked like the kind of person who was born to be scowling, something that Ollie had inherited in his natural expression. As he gazed out of the window, he looked annoyed.
Everyone always thought it was odd that someone as happy and bright as Audrey would marry someone as... well, not, as Ray. But then they look at Oliver, a perfect mix of both, and it makes sense.
"We're just going for a drive."
"Well next time can you give me a heads up first so I can not be dragged out of school early by my crazy mom?"
Audrey gave another forced laugh. "Were you in the middle of something important?"
"No, but we were just about to go to gym. I had the baseball bat Dad gave me in my locker and everything." He scowled, "Thank God we weren't playing lacrosse."
Ray nodded his agreement. "Yeah, lacrosse sucks."
What the two adults didn't say was that they were scared. Audrey was born with a rare sight, and every day they concern themselves with the fact that Oliver would have it too. People were looking for them, and they would be damned if they didn't get away first.
