Fawn flicked her wings anxiously as the elders conversed quietly between themselves. Her heart was beating a mile a minute. She had been caught trying to go past the border, and now the elders were discussing her punishment. Finally they stopped talking and turned to her. Anaìs, the leader of the elders looked down at the short fairy. "Fawn Woodrow, the elders and I have decided that you will serve on the cleanup crew for a week." The elder Fairy narrowed her dull grey eyes, "The only reason you are getting a light punishment is because you are underage and have never tried to cross the border before."
Fawn sucked in a breath of air. "Thats what you think." She smiled weakly, "Oh great Elder, I thank ye for your kindness and I will do as you have deemed." She followed her flowery words with a dramatic bow. The Elder seemed to like this, she smiled a sickly sweet smile, "Go home. You begin in the morning." Fawn bowed again and exited the hollow tree with a look of disgust on her delicate face.
"Fawn! Oh thank Fae your ok!" A small flash of green flew past her and circled above her head. "Tegan!" She fluttered up and embraced her little brother in a tight hug. He pulled away from her and said seriously, "Why did you get in trouble?" He asked quietly, his soft brown eyes filled with concern. She rolled her eyes and ruffled his dark brown hair, "Don't worry about it." He nodded, "Ok, well Mom wants you home." She touched his wings, "Wow, your wings are getting so big! And the color is looking nice!"
"Really? The boys at school said the won't ever get any bigger." He pouted. She smiled, "They don't know what their talking about." He giggled and fluttered up, "I believe you." He waved his hand, "Come on! Mom needs us home." He took off flying to their small treehouse. She smiled after him, he had a condition that stunted his growth. His body, and wings were way smaller than they were supposed to be. He looked like a NewWing, but in reality he was twelve years old.
She let out a long sigh and followed her small brother. Once she reached the treehouse she quietly slipped in and fluttered to her room. "Stop right there missy." Her mothers voice made her stop dead. She slowly turned around as her feet touched the floor. "Hey mom." Her mother sent a death glare that was so deep it seemed to penetrate her very soul. "Don't you 'hey mom me'." Her mother's pink eyes seemed to glow with rage, "I know what you did."
Fawn crossed her arms, "I only wanted to see something." Her mother's hot pink wings flickered and a sad looked crossed her face. "That is what got your father killed." Her eyes met Fawn's and she shook her head, "He too only wanted to see something." Her eyes grew watery, "And that something killed him." She wiped her eyes quickly with the back of her hand and added, "Please Fawn...don't do that again."
Fawn simply nodded and slipped into her room, shutting the door behind her. She wasn't going to try to do it again. She was going to do it. For years everyone has told her of the horrible monsters that roam outside the borders. And that her father was stupid enough to cross to the other side. Being stupid must run in the family. She quickly packed a small bag with a few necessities, including an extra outfit and some leaf boots. She preferred going barefoot but she wanted to be prepared.
"Fawn?"
She froze at the small and timid voice behind her. She turned, and sure enough there stood Tegan in her doorway. "Tegan-." She started to speak but he flew over to her and hugged her tightly, "Please be careful Fawn..." he murmured softly into her neck. She hugged him back, "I will be super careful. I promise." He pulled away, "Mom left for town, she won't be back till late."
Fawn smiled, "Thanks Tegan." Her mocha eyes found his green ones, "I love you Tegan, stay safe." She kissed him on the cheek and fluttered out of her room to the door. "Fawn?" She turned, "Yes?" His wings fluttered rapidly, "Try near the western gate, the guards are always asleep or betting on something." She cracked a grin, "I'll check it out." She opened the door and flew away quickly casting one last glance at Tegan.
