Demi's POV
I didn't sleep much last night. I actually didn't sleep at all. I think I was waiting for Jesse to walk in the room and tell me he's sorry and he doesn't want to take a break. That never happened though, so as the sun started to rise and creep through the cracks of the curtains, I took that time to get up and pack a bag for myself, Layla, and Bella. I only packed necessities for the next couple of days because even if I told Jesse we needed a break, I didn't mean forever. Once a bag was packed for each of us, I checked on Layla one last time before getting in the shower. I kept the shower quick in case Layla woke up, but when I got out, she was still fast asleep. I had to go to work today so I just planned on going to work then my parents house after. I don't know if Jesse is working today or not, so I guess I'll take Layla to my moms on the way since I know she's off today. When I was finally ready, Layla woke up so I sat on the bed and pulled my shirt up so she can eat. About five minutes in, I hear the door open and I look over to see Jesse walking in the room and I sigh heavily as I look down at Layla.
"I don't want you to leave." I hear him mumble and I look up to see him looking at the bags.
"I don't have a choice." I reply as I stroke Layla's cheek with my finger.
"Yes you do. You can stay and we can work this out." He responds quickly and that's when I feel the tears fill my eyes.
"I don't know." I mumble quietly as I continue looking down at Layla so he won't see how hurt I really am about all this.
"I do know Demi. I love you and I want you. Only you." He says firmly and I feel the bed dip near me, but I still don't look up.
"Then why can't you let me in?" I ask finally looking up at him as he sits on the edge of the bed looking down at his hands.
"I don't know how Demi. Last time I let someone in, they betrayed me." He says quietly and I shake my head as a single tear falls.
"And that's why we need to take a break. I don't think you were ever ready for all of this. I don't think either of us were." I say after a couple minutes and he finally looks up at me and shakes his head as he drifts his sight from me to Layla then back time. "We're not breaking up. We're just taking a break J." I then say softly.
"This is what you want?" He asks and I shake my head as I swallow down a lump.
"No, but it's what I need. What we both need." I reply as I look down at my left hand and slide off my ring. "We're not ready for this yet." I mumble as I hand him the ring as a couple more tears fall. He clamps his hand around the ring before standing up and walking out of the room and that's when I'm finally able to breathe. Once Layla finished eating, I got her dressed and changed her diaper before walking downstairs with her. I lay her down in her rocker while I go back upstairs so I can grab the bags.
"Who's watching Layla today?" Jesse asks once I make it downstairs and I see him holding her in his arms.
"I was gonna drop her at my moms then go to work." I answer as I put the bags by the door.
"I'm off today. I can watch her." He says and I look up at him as he bends down to kiss Layla's head and I sigh.
"Okay. If you decide to go see Taylor today, don't. I don't want her around Layla." I say grabbing my purse and keys. I then walk over to them and I bend down to kiss Layla's forehead before standing up straight again and giving Jesse one more glance before walking away. When I got off of work, I went home to grab Layla and our bags before I go pick up Bella and go to my moms. Jesse didn't say much, but he did kiss Layla goodbye before walking outside. I took a long deep breath before I got Layla in her car seat and brought her to the car with the bags. I picked up Bella on my way to my parents house and to say she was confused was an understatement.
