Training was going really well, actually. Izuku was incredibly good with One For All at this point. He had learned a new way to preserve his body but maximized his power, through his fingers in a new 'Shoot Style'. He was able to go to about twenty percent at this point, which was a big improvement for the boy.

Him and Bakugo had sparred a couple of times since the training began. Katsuki was becoming an even stronger opponent, with quirk maximizing making him nearly unbeatable. His explosions were growing bigger in size and strength. He'd even caused a few small fires during training from how severe the flames were.

Katsuki felt trapped. Like there were two parts of him at play. He had grown to really enjoy spending time with everyone, even his grumpy demeanor showed the complete opposite. He liked when they had campfires every single night, and Denki would play the guitar, and Jiro would sing along with everyone as they ate s'mores. He loved it when they would start singing a song that had any curse words in it. It became a screaming match for who could scream the obscene word over Tenya and Aizawa's attempted yells at censoring the students. He felt for the first time that he belonged somewhere. It was kind of a scary feeling. He liked when Kirishima would bring his blanket to the campfires, and a shark stuffed animal, and eventually fell asleep amongst everyone. It was funny, it was dorky. It was definitely a Shitty Hair thing to do.

He liked when Koda brought little critters along to the hang outs, it was a really personal experience with animals. He rather liked the little chipmunks and squirrels that came along. And he liked when Sero would get scared by some bird chasing him and nearly tape the damn thing to the trees out of fear, Mina cheering him on and recording it. He liked when Sato baked snacks for them to eat around the campfire. He even liked when IcyHot and Midoriya worked really hard making a good dinner for everyone. Izuku always made it extra spicy for him, making him blush a little every time he was served it.

But he didn't belong here. Everyone was too nice. He didn't deserve it. He didn't deserve any of their respect or kindness. He was bitter, heartless, rude. When someone smiled at him, he just scowled. He wasn't going to be some memorable hero like they were going to be. Kirishima was going to fucking destroy villains. Denki and Jiro were going to be amazing rescuers. IcyHot... he was going to be better than his dad could ever be. Momo and Pink Cheeks, they could do anything their minds wanted. Izuku—

He would make the greatest hero ever. He'd be the number one hero without even trying. His compassion, power, and humanity propelled him places Katsuki knew he could never reach. He was already teetering as a hero, with a severe lack of empathy and compassion. He knew that. Izuku didn't have such an issue. He had no issue putting his life on the line to save someone else. He was really careless in that way. Katsuki so many times wanted to yell at his friend that he was going to kill himself by being the hero, but the words would get caught in his throat every single time.

He didn't want Izuku to be a hero. In the most selfish way. He wanted Izuku to run away with him. He knew it was just fantasy. He knew Izuku would never give up on his dream of becoming a hero, surpassing All Might. It was foolish to even think for a second that he was more important than that dream. Watching the way Izuku looked when he saved someone, even if it was something as small as controlling a busy intersection as a street guide. He loved the possibility of making an impact. Katsuki's flame of being the ultimate villain-stopper faded, any dreams of being number one seeming to fade with it. What did he have to prove? He was just getting in the way of Izuku's happiness.

Maybe part of him was scared at the prospect of running away. He had a good life here. He had a clean path to success. Heroes liked him, wanted to work with him. He had people who cared about him, more than his shit parents could ever. He was a good student. He was smart. He could just suck down his feelings (he'd done so his whole life) and deal with it, then get out and do nothing.
