"There is a gun in my stomach. There is a hole in my throat. There is a reason why every good thing ends with a forrest burning."- SK Osborn
Sirena felt it before she saw it. Sitting at the small kitchen table of her apartment, after weeks of it being in Josh's possession, and having a warm cup of coffee by her side. The hair in her arms and in the back of her head stood on end, a shiver running down her spine and her eyes leaving the screen of her phone to focus on her —apparently empty— living room.
A small spark appeared in the middle of the space, alerting the mermaid of what was to come. In a matter of seconds, the spark had expanded into the shape of a person until it actually materialised into someone Sirena definitely didn't want to see.
"Leave." The young girl spat bitterly, her figure stiff and ready to defend herself in case she had to.
"It's been three years." The beautiful woman sighed and rolled her eyes in frustration, crossing her arms over her chest and furrowing her eyebrows.
"Nereus is still dead."
Both women pressed their lips into a thin line, not knowing what to say next after the mention of the main cause of Sirena distancing herself from her parents.
The older woman's factions softened the longer she stared at her daughter. Sirena was no longer the young girl who had the most contagious laugh in the pod, who wished to grow up and be just like her mother, her hero.
All of those dreams and good intentions were gone, buried deep within Sirena's soul, wanting to avoid feeling the pain it usually brought upon her.
"You look so beautiful ... and strong–"
"No thanks to you, mom." The venom dripped from Sirena's voice, her hands fisting at her sides. "What do you want? What are you doing here?"
"What I've always wanted." She tried to take a step forward, but her daughter took a step back. "For you to come home."
"The Marmoris isn't home, nor the Thalassos." Sirena was firm in her statements. "I won't go back there to be some sort of walking vessel for children. I am happy here, my true family is here."
"Oh, please." Aralyn scoffed. "You think these people will be enough for you? Will they understand that your skin will start to crack if they keep you away from your people for too long?"
"I don't need to be with merfolks, I just need the water, Mother." Sirena hissed, pulling her hand away from Aralyn's attempt at holding her wrist. "Go back the way you came and forget about me and whatever plans you and Father had."
