Sitting down on a small log, I look over at where Katniss is, her limp body hidden under a small bush. A small fire sits in front of me as I roast a squirrel on a stick and wait for her to wake. A rustling comes from where she is and I stand up to see her eyes open as she rubs her head. Her brows have drawn together, forming a crease on her forehead as she looks at her surroundings dizzily.
"Good afternoon, sleeping beauty." I comment sarcactically as I lean against the tree opposite her. Noticing me, she pulls her body into a sitting position, rubbing her eyes as she grimaces. Stopping, she notices the leaves that are covering her hands.
"What's all this?" she asks as she pulls one from her neck, dropping it to the floor as she pulls herself to her feet and wobbles slightly. Rolling my eyes, I go back and sit down on the log where Katniss joins me.
"I don't know, some healing plant." I mumble as I pick up a cooked squirrel, handing her it. She smiles weakly as she takes it from me, her teeth sinking into it as I begin cooking another. "You'll have to ask Rue, she put it there." I mumble as I point the squirrel on a stick at the tree on the far side of the opening. Following my gaze, Katniss looks at the tree, a confused expression fixed on her face.
"There's nobody there." she comments as she turns to look at me, concern on her face. Oh great, she thinks I'm going crazy. Sighing audibly, I stand up and walk across to the tree, peeking behind it to see a small girl hiding.
"You can come out now Rue. Katniss isn't going to hurt you." I assure, taking her hand as she timidly steps out from behind the tree. Her dark eyes gaze at Katniss as she follows me to the log, tugging at the sleeves of her top as she sits down. "If it wasn't for Rue, you'd probably be dead." I tell Katniss as I hand Rue a cooked squirrel and just as Katniss did, she sinks her teeth into it.
"Well thank you for saving my life Rue." mumbles Katniss in between mouthfuls as she smiles at her. Smiling back, Rue shuffles closer to us, her confidence growing with each passing second. I begin eating my own squirrrel, the juicy meat calming my roaring stomach.
"So who's Peeta?" I ask after several moments of silence. Lokking up from my food, I see heat rise in Katniss's cheeks as she looks away. A smirk forms of Rue's face as I exchange a glance with her, my eyes narrowing. "You were mumbling about him in your sleep." I explain as she drops her head into her hands, an embarrassed groan escaping her lips.
"He's her boyfriend." teases Rue as we both watch the blush on Katniss's face grow brighter. Chuckling, I nudge Katniss with my elbow and raise my eyebrows as she glares at me. "They're in love."
"Oooo, Katniss has boyfriend does she?" I ask as I nudge her again and she rolls her eyes at me before shaking her head as a chuckle escapes her lips. As the blush leaves her cheeks, Katniss turns to me, a smirk fixed on her face as she raises her eyebrows at me. Oh no, what's she going to do?
"What about you Abi?" asks Katniss, her tone teasing as she nudges me just as I did her, "Do you have anyone special in your life?" Rolling my eyes and sighing audibly, I hand Rue my squirrel and walk off towards our weapons. "Oh come on, you have to tell us."
"No." I admit, picking up Katniss's bow and tossing it to her. She catches it with ease, her brows drawing together and her forehead crinkling. "I don't have anyone special in my life." I explain as I hook my knives in my belt and pass Rue the backpack of supplies.
"I don't believe you." teases Rue as she stands up, finishing her food before tossing the bones on the forest floor. Katniss frowns as she too stands, walking across to where I stand, my back to them.
"You've never been in love?" asks Katniss, her voice sympathetic as she looks at me. Turning around to face her, I shake my head.
"The more you love..." I pause as I look at the forest floor, tears pricking at the edges of my eyes. No. I'm not going to cry now. Taking a deep shaky breath, I close my eyes and bite my lip in an attempt to hold in my tears. "The more you suffer." Looking up through blurred vision, I see Katniss look down, probable pondering on the statement I've just made.
"That's deep." comments Rue as she comes skipping across to where I am.
"Well when you've been lied to your whole life like I have." I look at Rue, smiling weakly before turning away and walking off into the forest. "Everythings deep."
