A gentle breeze blows through the forest, rustling the loose leaves that gather on the floor as I take a seat on a small log beside Katniss. Her head is hung low, her eyes fixed on the ground as she draws in the dust with a stick.
"Hey, you okay?" I ask as she looks up from the ground, tossing the stick aside as she turns to face me. Smiling weakly, Katniss nods before turning away from me and looking out at the team who are rushing around in front of us, desperately trying to collect all of their belongings.
"I guess you'll be leaving by the end of the day." she mumbles as her eyes drop back to the ground, fixing on a small bug that squirms through the dirt.
"Yeah I guess we will." I agree, placing my hand gently on her shoulder and squeezing it reassuringly. "I'm so sorry Katniss." I whisper as my eyes drop to the ground where hers remain fixed.
"What for?" she asks as she looks up from the ground, frown lines forming on her face as she sits up straighter. Removing my hand from her shoulder, I turn my body to face her and smile at her weakly.
"Everything." I mumble, my eyes looking past her as I momentarily zone out form the world, my mind somewhere far away as I remain silent. "But most of all, I'm sorry that I made a promise I couldn't keep." My mind coming back to the present, I turn to face her again, my eyes fixing in hers as they begin to sting.
"You mean the promise to help me win." she concludes, looking down at her palms, tracing the patters on her palm with her finger. Just like I do.
"I shouldn't have made you that promise when I knew I couldn't keep it." I whisper, taking her hand gently in mine sand squeezing it reassuringly. "I really do wish I could stay and help you."
"Hey it's fine." she assures me, placing her other hand on top of mine as she smiles at me weakly. "One life is nothing compared to the millions you could save if you go after them."
"It shouldn't be like this." I state, my eyes scanning the forest in front of me as the team gather in the centre of the clearing. I guess it's time to say goodbye now. "Thank you Katniss. For everything." I pause, smiling at her as I take a deep breath. Saying goodbye is harder than I thought. "I wish there was something I could do to repay you."
"Well there is one thing." adds Katniss, glancing out at where her bow and arrow rest against a tree, her jacket slung over the branch above it.
"Anything." I assure her, squeezing her hand tightly as she turns to look at me through testy eyes. "You name it and it's done."
"Could you look into my future?" she asks, her voice gentle and quiet, a complete contrast to the usual confidence she has. Gently, I tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear and smile at her gently.
"Of course I can." I whisper as I close my eyes, taking a deep breath as I concentrate on Katniss, pulling power from my core and stretching it through my whole body and to my mind. As my breath leaves my lungs, I am sent into a spiral of images, each one a fragment of Katniss' future. Some are happy like the image of a small family, the mother running to the eldest daughter, Katniss as the younger daughter wraps her arms around her sisters legs tightly. Other images as sad, Katniss watching as a fire burns in a building in front of her eyes. Two particular fragments stand out to me though. One of Katniss with a bow in the capitol, President Snow stood in the centre as Katniss raiser her bow, aiming it at him. In the other image, Katniss sits on a hill, a baby in her arms as she watches another child play with their father. As I am brought back to reality, the images fade as air invades my lungs again as I open my eyes.
"Well?" asks Katniss, a concerned look on her face as she stares at me.
"You're going to be okay Katniss." I assure her, a genuine smile creeping onto my face as I watch her shoulders relax, all the fear and tension leaving her body. "Everything will work out it the end."
"Hey Abi, you ready to go?" asks Stephen as he stands in front of the two of us, a bag slung over his shoulder as I nod at him. Standing up, I smile down at Katniss again before turning to Stephen.
"As ready as I'll ever be." I assure him as I step to his side, taking his hand in mine as he laces his fingers with mine. I really thought I'd lost him the other day.
"Good luck Abi." shouts Katniss from behind us as we step into the centre of the clearing with the rest of the team. She stand up, leaning against a tree as I look towards her again.
"You too Katniss." I whisper as the team join hands with each other, a link forming between us as my power behind to radiate through the group."Oh and...make sure you go for Coin."
"What do you mean?" she asks, frowning as the wind picks up and a bright light begins shining in the centre of the group, light flying out into the darkness of the forest.
"You'll know when the time comes. For now, go win." I shout as the team begins to disappear and the light fades from the forest and we are transported through space.
Now it's time for a new adventure.
