The chatter of the night fades and Stephen closes the door of his room back in the Leaky Cauldron. Turning around, he pulls out a seat from under the desk before he gestures for Christine to take a seat as he takes one opposite her on the bed.
"Stephen there's something you should know." Christine mumbles quickly as she looks down at the floor between the two, her breathing fast as Stephen narrows his eyes at her.
"What is it?" Stephen asks cautiously as he leans forwards on the bed causing its springs to groan underneath him as he reaches forwards and takes Christines hand in his own. "Is something wrong?"
"First I need you to answer one question for me." Christine states as she removes her hand gently from Stephens, careful not to offend him. Slightly confused by Christine sudden distance, Stephen sits up straight as he nods once. "Did you feel anything when you were with Abi tonight?" Christine asks bluntly causing Stephen to frown slightly.
"That doesn't matter." Stephen assures her as he stand up, a loud squeak coming from the old bed as he steps towards the small window and looks out it at the men and women leaving the pub downstairs
"Just answer the question Stephen." Christine demands as she stands up from her chair and walks closer to Stephen whose gaze still remains fixed on the people outside, specifically an old couple who sit on a bench outside the Leaky Cauldron.
"It felt familiar, like we already knew each other." Stephen mumbles as he turns to face her, his eyes fixed on the floor at his feet as he thinks back to the dance earlier and how natural it felt. "It felt like home." he continues as he looks up from the floor and directly into Christines eyes.
"That's what I thought." Christine whispers as a tear traces its way down the contours of her face before falling onto her red dress and leaving a wet spot behind as it soaks in.
"What did you want to tell me Christine?" Stephen asks as he lifts his hands and places them on either side of Christines face as he looks down into her eyes and steps a bit closer to her.
"I still love you Stephen but..." she pauses as she takes a deep breath, swallowing the tears that drown her cheeks as she smiles up at Stephen before taking his hand in hers and removing it from her face. "I can't be with you."
"What, why not?" Stephen asks as he looks down at his hand
"Your heart already belongs to someone else." Christine explains as she places her hand in his chest above his heart, his heartbeat beating strong under her palm.
"And what if it belonged to you." Stephen asks as he places his hand over hers and wraps his fingers around hers before taking her hand and placing a gentle kiss against her knuckles before he looks back into her eyes.
"But it doesn't." Christine argues as she removes her hand from his, smiling weakly at him as he frowns.
"It could though." Stephen
"Maybe for a short time but it wouldn't be forever. We're not meant to work out Stephen." Christine
"And I'm meant to work out with Abi?" Stephen asks as he steps backwards, turning his back on Christine as he rubs the muscles under his eyes gently with his fingers.
"Yeah. You may not remember it but you cared about her, a lot." Christine
"So this is it?" Stephen
"I'm letting go Stephen." she whispers as she places her hand gently against his cheek. Smiling through her tears, Christine takes a deep breath as Stephen places his hand over hers. "For you and Abi." she finishes as she reaches up on her tip toes, pressing her lips lightly against his as the door flies open.
"Stephen?" I whisper as my body freezes in the doorway. My nose begins to tingle as tears prick at me eyes. Through blurred vision, I watch as Stephen quickly pulls away, his head whipping around to face me as he smiles.
"Abi." he sighs as his shoulders relax, his smile growing as his eyes soften. Stepping out the way of the two of us, Christine looks down to the floor as she gently touches her lips with her fingers.
"I'm sorry if I'm interrupting something," I grunt as my body regains its movement, my breathing heavy as I look back and forth between the two of them. "please do ignore me and continue." I add, my voice cold and unwelcoming. I don't know why I'm so mad at him. He doesn't remember a thing about us.
Before I can walk away, Stephen has rushed to my side, his hand around my wrist as he turns me to face him. "We weren't-" I place my finger over his lips, silencing him as I pull my hand from his grasp. Looking into his eyes, I realize that something has changed in them since earlier.
"Don't worry I won't be around much longer to interrupt the two of you." I hiss, my voice bitter as I glare at Christine. His eyebrows drawing together to form a frown line on his forehead, Stephen reaches out again only for me to bat his hand away.
"What do you mean by that?" asks Stephen as I take a few steps backwards, clawing at my cheeks with my sleeve as I wipe away my tears. Shaking my head, I smile bitterly at Stephen as my hand begins to shake by my side. "Abi?" She whispers again as he grabs my arm, this time turning me to face him so that I can't squirm from his grasp.
"Let. Go." I growl through my teeth as I push Stephen hard against the chest, his body wobbling slightly but his grip remaining strong on my arm. Closing my eyes, I bite my lips as to hold back the tears before dropping my head, it hitting Stephens chest as he gently strokes the top of it.
"Where are you planning on going when I do?" he asks as he loosens his grip enough for me to push him backwards and wriggle my arm free, Stephen almost tripping over the chair behind him. As I open my eyes again, I take a deep breath and step far enough away that Stephen won't be able to stop me this time.
"I'm going home."
