As Ganon evolved into Calamity Ganon, there they stood, the princess and her knight. Link, tired, drained, and on the verge of death, falls onto one knee. Zelda pleads with him to run away and save himself but she falls on deaf ears as Link gathers up the last of his strength and stands up to face the approaching guardians. In an attempt to save his life, Zelda selflessly stood between the guardians and Link, lifting her hand in hopes that the Goddesses' power would finally awaken. Nothing. Just as it had been since she was a young girl. Her whole life she had been told that the power of the Goddess Hylia was the key to her destiny. She had prayed at every spring and had dedicated nearly her whole life to praying to the goddesses for the gift that she was meant to possess. But even now, in her hour of need, her prayers were ignored. As she felt the guilt of everything that had happened, Link jumped in front of her and was shot by a guardian. He collapsed into her arms. Desperate, she calls out to him in hopes that he would awaken. They lock eyes for a brief moment then Link accepts his defeat and dies. Zelda cries out as Link lay lifeless in her arms.
The princess noticed the Master Sword glowing a few feet away as she tried to collect herself in a more professional manner. Before Link had pulled the sword, she could hear the spirit of the Master Sword speak to her. This wasn't the case anymore as she watched the once glowing sword become dim. She realized what this meant, she had truly caused the death of her beloved knight.
When two of the castle guards found her moments later, Zelda looked up at them with an eerie lifelessness in her eyes. She had finally realized what her true destiny was. She was the ruler of Hyrule that had brought destruction to her own kingdom. The four Champions of the Divine Beasts: Mipha, Daruk, Urbosa, and Revali, her father and now Link. She was responsible for all of their deaths.
Later she headed to the Korok Forest to return the Master Sword to its pedestal where it could be guarded by the Great Deku Tree until the next hero of Hyrule would come to claim the legendary sword and finally free the kingdom from Ganon.
