New Year's Eve
Shorty's barLisa had been avoiding Jennie ever since that night they were stargazing. They almost had a moment. The thai felt the brunette felt that too.
But, no, Lisa thought. Not now. Not now that Jennie is still with Ten. And I promised Irene.
The thai wouldn't let Jennie cheat on her boyfriend, not when Ten had been nice to Lisa.
Lisa couldn't help but notice Jennie's growing impatience and upset over the thai. Chahee was wondering if they had been fighting again so Lisa would just invite Jennie to watch a movie in the living room but with a good distance away from each other.
It was almost midnight and the countdown was yet to begin. The place was filled with a lot of crowds standing around a gigantic tv Shorty had placed in the middle of the bar, televising said countdown.
Lisa took a swig from her beer as she stared at the beautiful brunette chatting with her friends at a distance. Ever since the talk they had, the thai couldn't help but fall even more in love with Jennie. Now that she completely understood how Chaerin had affected the shorter brunette's trust, Lisa realized she'd never ever hurt Jennie and she would treat her the way she deserved to be treated. And that was to love her without receiving anything back.
Hazel eyes met brown ones. And for a moment, they seemed to have a connection. Lisa shrugged herself as she averted her gaze at the tv instead. The crowd had now started the countdown.
Lisa wondered what her new year would be like. She wondered whether Ten and Jennie would florish this year. She wondered if Irene and her can finally be official. She then remembered how her parents waited for the new year's countdown outside the roof of their house, wearing thick coats to endure the cold winds. A tear slowly formed in Lisa's eye and she quickly blinked it away.
"Ten! Nine! Eight..."
Lisa looked at Chahee and Doc, arms around each other as they screamed at each other's faces. She wondered when they would get married.
"Five! Four! Three...."
Lisa took another swig of the beer, averting her view from the couples waiting to kiss at midnight.
"One!"
And two little warm hands grasped Lisa's face and soft warm lips met hers. It wasn't quick nor long. It was special. It was perfect.
Quickly remembering Irene and her promise to Irene, Lisa was the first one to pull away from the kiss.
Jennie looked confused then disappointed. Then realization hit Jennie as she turned around and walked away from Lisa.
"Jen!" Lisa called out, but the crowd had now started dancing.
Jungkook seemed to be the only one who noticed and went after the brunette to comfort her.
Lisa had never felt so guilty on not doing the thing she had always wanted to do.
-
Minutes later
Outside Shorty's barUpon seeing the thai approached them by the door, Jungkook quickly squeezed Jennie's shoulders as he stood. "You two need to talk.."
Lisa swallowed a lump in her throat upon seeing a crying Jennie before her, sitting by the stairs outside the bar. Did she cry because Lisa pulled away from the kiss? Was she sad about what happened? Or did she feel guilty about the whole thing?
As soon as Jungkook left the two of them alone, Lisa took a seat beside Jennie.
"I'm sorry, Lis," Jennie managed to say as she sniffle a cry. Lisa placed her arm around the brunette's shoulders, feeling the need to comfort her.
"Hey, it's okay, Jen.. You don't have to be sorry," Lisa replied. "I... I'm sorry I... I... pulled away. I never intended to hurt you like that... I-"
"It's fine, Lisa," Jennie said, no longer crying. "I was... I was brazen at the time, I didn't know what I was thinking..."
Brazen? Jennie, you're taken, Lisa thought.
"Is it Irene?" Jennie went on when the thai didn't reply.
Lisa slowly nodded. The small movement made the brunette sniffle.
"Hey, you have Ten, right?"
Jennie smirked as she stared at the horizon. The thai continued, "Maybe we're just at the wrong place at the wrong time-"
"With the wrong person?"
Lisa froze as she stared at Jennie beside her. "You don't know that-""How do you know, Lisa? How do you know that this, whatevet I'm feeling right now towards you, isn't real?"
Lisa's mouth dropped open as she tried to come up with a valid response. "Maybe you just miss Ten and-"
"Yeah, right," Jennie sighed. A car passed along the bar and greeted them a Happy New Year. The both of them were startled. After a moment, they both started to laugh.
"What a way to spend New Year's eve, huh?" Jennie uttered after wiping her face.
The thai smiled as she offered her handkerchief to the brunette. "Yeah, I'd surely remember this one."
"I'm happy for you, you know. With Irene. Don't say I didn't care... I was... I thought-"
"Hey, Jen... it's okay.. I know."
The brunette sighed as she stared again before her, avoiding the thai's eyes. "Jisoo also told me about her and Rosie."
"She finally did?"
"Wait, you knew?" Jennie was now glaring at her.
Lisa immediately raised her hands in defense. "Hey, it was not my place to tell, okay?"
Jennie nodded as she calmed down. "You're right. I guess I was just scared to be alone... You know, Jisoo will always be with Rosie... and people always leave my side... I remember Chahee did the same for a couple of months when she went to Europe by herself. I thought maybe I wouldn't hurt because I thought I was already used to this."
"Hey, Jennie... I am still here, okay? I will never ever leave you... I promise you that..."
Jennie only smiled at her then she turned her attention at Lisa's handkerchief, now covered by dry tears. "I guess I'm just scared... I'm always scared..."
After a moment's pause, Lisa said as she looked at the abandoned building before them.
"You know, you're wrong about what you said on my second night here in Busan."
Jennie now stared at her. "You still remember the things I said?"
Lisa smirked as she avoided those piercing feline eyes. "Not everyone leaves, Jen.... I'll never leave you.. I'll always be by your side. As long as you want me there. You'll always have me."
