“Good, Sadie. I would have almost not noticed you.”

“Almost not?” Blodhgarm and the other elves were teaching me how to open my mind and how to read others. This had started last week after we had finished How To Train Your Dragon and Jeod suddenly became busy. And since I was bored and Jeod  couldn’t visit anymore, the elves had decided to take it upon themselves to entertain me. This really wasn’t necessary, but since they offered, I had decided to take them up on it. Besides, reading peoples mind co8ld come in handy some day.

I had recently found out that when people weren’t expecting a mind attack from someone, they let their thoughts wonder. Their protective defenses were down, and if you opened your mind to theirs just enough that they didn’t know you were there and you could read their thoughts, you had an advantage. Most people from my world had intense defenses, which is why no one can ever truly read someone elses mind. But as previously stated, their thoughts wondered. Because no one ever attacked them, their thoughts wandered A LOT. People here in Alagaesia, especially the elves and other magic using folk, were always ready for an attack, so that made it hard for their thoughts to wander. But I found that if you found a cover of some sort, you’d blend in and they wouldn’t notice you as easily. Yes, they would notice you if they were purposely looking for something that was out of the ordinary. I also found out that your defenses, disguises, and other forms of mind communication were only limited by your imagination. Mine is over active, so my defenses were ALMOST unbreachable.

“Now, Saphira isn’t suspecting you. What is she thinking about?” he asked. I opened my mind and stretched it out to find her (no, these terms are not literal). I found her no problem because she, Eragon, and Arya were outside talking. As usual, the conversation was on camp business that Eragon had to try and deal with. He was running around like a chicken with his head cut off trying to do Nasuada’s duties. But all I could find from Saphira, thought after thought, was about that fly that was buzzing around her head….

“She’s thinking about how good a certain roasted fly might taste like,” I told Blodhgarm. He and all of the other elves laughed, which made me laugh. It was also odd because they NEVER laugh. I had gotten them to lighten up when they were around me, which made me feel better being around them, but the moment they stepped out of the tent or someone else came around they got tense and serious again; which made things awkward once again.

We couldn’t stop laughing (mostly because we all knew it was true), which was painful because my back was still sore (but I didn’t care). Then Angela walked in and ruined all our fun.

“Now what is this?” she almost exclaimed. “You know Sadie shouldn’t be laughing right now! She could injure herself further.” The elves stopped laughing and looked ashamed. I stopped laughing and looked at Angela with my most-annoyed-you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me-look.

“We are sorry,” one of the elves said, “we did not mean any harm.”

“Everyone out.” Angela ordered. It was bandage changing time.

“Now, don’t do anything strenuous,” Angela chided. Are you kidding!?! I was free of bandages for the first time in 3 weeks!! I was able to move my arm again! I lifted my arm quickly above my head, for the first time in weeks, and then dropped it back down as pain coursed across my back.

“Slowly Sadie! Slowly!”

I lifted my arm slowly and was able to keep it in the air for a couple of minutes without pain. As I lifted it, I could feel my skin stretching and straining to stay together. Then I got tired of having my arm in the air and brought it down slowly. That felt great!
