Part 35
Evan’s POV
As soon as I felt the air change, I instantly regretted walking in. Yeah, I know in all those corny movies they talk about ‘a gust of cold air’ or some stupid thing like that, but they were 100% right. Just stepping foot into the warehouse sent a shiver down my spine as all the warm air was sucked out of the room. I could feel Calista tense up beside me, and I clasped her hand even harder as we walked in. The door slammed shut behind us and this time I jumped as well, spooked by how eerily quiet it suddenly was.
Moonlight snuck in through the high windows and gave everything a pale, ghostly shimmer. I could see outlines of empty crates and boxes haphazardly placed about the room. As my eyes scanned the space we were in, I followed a metal staircase with a rotting railing that led to multiple floors filled with doors leading to rooms unknown.
“Maybe this won’t be as easy as I thought…” Calista murmured, staring at the doors in despair. “There must be hundreds of rooms. How are we supposed to find them!”
“We will. Or we’ll die trying,” I smiled at her, trying to create some sort of reassurance.
“Yeah, well that’s not so easy to say when dying is an actual possibility…”she grumbled again, but her eyes shone with newfound resilience as she strode further into the building.
“Okay, let’s get to work then. I’ll search upstairs and you look down here. If you find them just shout and I’ll come. Alright?” I let go of her hand and set off in the direction of the stairs.
“No!” she suddenly shouted, then covered her mouth. “I mean…no. We should stick together. I…I don’t want to lose you too,” she murmured, looking away as she slipped her hand in mine once more.
I nodded, grateful for how dark the room was as she couldn’t see my face. Slowly but surely, we began our search.
***
It turns out searching for missing people in an abandoned warehouse is extremely overrated. After almost an hour scouring the main floor, we had found nothing but a disturbing number of spider webs. It came to the point where being attacked by Drake would have been preferable. Still, we hung in there and searched through every nook and cranny of the first floor.
“Well, time to start on the second floor then,” I tried to sound cheery, but my pessimism must have shown through. Calista simply sighed and gave me a half smile,
“Yeah, I guess so. I don’t know about those stairs though. If the railing is that bad, who knows how sturdy the rest of it is.”
She had a point.
“Wait here. I’ll go check them out,” I nodded before making my way towards the stairs. Calista was right, they did look a little shaky.
I placed one foot gently on a step and, making sure not to lean on the railings, slowly put weight down on it. Although it creaked a little, it stayed firm, and I spent a couple minutes hopping up and down various steps to test their stability. In hindsight, I probably spent too long doing that, but it was mainly because halfway through I realized how stupid I looked and by then I was just buying time before I had to face Calista again.
Finally, I took a breath and turned back around to face her, already prepared for the mocking smirk that would be on her lips.
I had it all planned out, my reaction and even various comebacks.
Of course, not everything goes as planned.
When I turned around, Calista was nowhere to be found.
***Authors note: Um...Hi...remember me? >_< Sorry for the long silence. I've been having some pretty nasty writers block and everything I wrote just sucked. Even now i'm not completely satisfied with this chapter. :/ Even so, i'm starting to get back into the swing of things, and I promise i'll update soon :)
Happy new years!
