Part 16

Calista’s POV

I am officially an idiot.

/Finally you believe me!/

Hey! You’re not supposed to agree! What kind of a conscience are you! Aren’t you supposed to be encouraging me or talking me out of this or something?

/Yeah. But right now I’m on my break. So I gotta go. My doughnut is waiting./

Peach.

Don’t you DARE leave me!

PEACH!!!

Frustrated, I kicked a rock so ferociously that it immediately flew past my line of vision. Clanking against some faraway object. How could she leave me now? Now of all times!

I pulled my coat tighter over my body as I continued to walk to the café. In my defense, I did consider not going. I just wanted to sit at home, and act like yesterday never happened. But after thinking logically, I realized that there were just too many problems for me to just ignore this whole thing. I touched my forehead gently, to think that I could be marked. And I still had no idea what it really meant. The only thing I know is what Evan told me…

I picked up my pace as the air seemed to grow even colder and was relieved when I finally reached the café. Just as he said, Evan was waiting outside the door reading something, but when I came closer he quickly put it away and out of my view as he smirked at me.

“I knew you’d be here.”

“Shut-up. Just talk.”

“So…you want me to shut-up…and talk?”

I frowned at him as his smirk widened, one of his thin eyebrows slinking up his face until he stared critically at me.

“You know what I mean. Explain. Now.”

I was already uncomfortable enough in his presence. Even though he probably meant no harm, there was just something in the air around him that always gave me a bad feeling. His grin disappeared as he nodded,

“Fine. Come on then.”

“Wait! Where are we going?”

“Back to the hill.”

I sighed and stuffed my hands into my coat pockets again before nodding silently. Evan set off and I reluctantly followed. I really wasn’t looking forward to spending more time alone with him.

All too soon, we arrived and he plopped down onto the grass once again. I joined him only this time I turned so I was facing him head on. A determined look on my face.

“Now that we’re at the hill, explain.”

“Jeez, no eye for beauty have we? Why don’t you just examine the scenery for a while before I-”

I glared at him. Attempting to burn imaginary holes in his skin through my stony gaze. Eventually, it worked as he shrugged and grinned again.

“Okay, okay. But I’ll warn you now. It’s a long story.”

“Well it’s not exactly like I have any other choice but to listen, now stop with the melodrama and start talking.”

For a split second he grinned again before becoming serious.

“There’s an ancient legend. Not many people know of it now, or they know some variation of it, but this legend is about other lives. A group of people, they believed in another world. Not the afterlife or supernatural creatures like werewolves, but an alternate dimension in itself. This dimension was called ‘Vitacis’ and was much like what some people call ‘Heaven’.”
