Part 27

Evan’s POV

I was making a sandwich when I heard it. A screaming sound pierced through the music filled room. Scratching my head in confusion, I checked my iPod for what was playing: When I Grow Up by Mayday Parade (The Punk Goes Pop version).

“That’s not usually on the song…” I mumbled to myself.

Pulling out my earplugs, I heard it again. Only this time was louder. I walked towards the front door hesitantly and stepped outside to find Calista sprinting towards me screaming like there was no tomorrow.

“Wha-”

She slammed painfully into my chest as she finally reached me, throwing me back a few steps.

“Help! No, run! Run! No, no time, help. I just-” she was talking at supersonic speed. Her eyes wide and her face pale. Grabbing onto her shoulders, I forced her to face me.

“Calista! Calm down! Now take a deep breath and tell me why you look like a psycho murderer is trying to kill you and mount your head on his wall.”

She paid no attention to my murderer reference and focused her eyes on me, the pupils seemed coated with fear and I frowned.

“I was just walking when it came up after me and it’s huge! It’s like-”

A thundering roar cut her off.

“It’s coming! Oh god Evan it’s coming!!”

Fear consumed her again as suddenly an overwhelming sense of protectiveness filled me. I hated seeing her like this. Whatever was coming, I’d fight it straight on.

Another, even louder roar sounded as the beast ran across the corner and came to a halt a few feet in front of us. My breath caught in my throat.

It was a creature unlike any I’d seen before. It fairly resembled a dog, only was the size of a small dinosaur. It’s body was long and seemed to be scaled similar to a dragon. A black tongue slowly slipped between his lips, resembling a snake in the most bone chilling way. It’s small blood shot eyes peered at me as if focusing it’s attention on deciphering it’s reaction to me.

“Calista. Get back.” I whispered softly, inching back slightly as well. She nodded and ran out of sight behind me. The beast stared once more before opening it’s mouth. Jagged teeth could be seen and from the back of it’s throat I saw an orange glow.

“Holy-”

Jumping back, I swerved just in time for the blast of fire-like energy to fly past me. It wanted a fight? Fine. I’d fight.

Righting myself, I paused for one second before I threw a deep purple ray of energy in it’s direction. It swerved it’s head and cried in pain as I managed to get it’s eye.

Now things were serious.

Quick as a flash, the creature struck again. I dodged, feeling the energy swish past my nose. Wasting no time I attacked again, leaping out as I repeatedly shot bolts of purple energy. Although most shots missed, I managed to hit a few key spots and smirked as the creature roared in pain. Then, my eye caught sight of a figure and my smirk vanished.

Calista was inching towards the monster, in her hand a metal pole. Grimacing, she swung it with all her might into the calf of the beast. It pulled back, slightly shocked before turning it’s fury to her.

Stupid girl!

“I said get back!” I screamed, before running and launching myself onto the back of the creature. Blind to possibilities of injuries, I shot energy directly into it’s exposed back. It screeched and flung me off. I tripped and stumbled for a moment before getting back on my feet.
