Part 8

Calista’s POV

I slowly dragged myself to gym. Fighting the urge to burst into tears right then and there. Today was officially the worst day of my life. The scene from the greenhouse and the letter kept forcing it’s way into my mind. Making my head pound. I couldn’t bear it

/Keep it together Calista. Don’t worry. Gym’s your last period. After this you can go home. Go home where you can be safe./

Yeah. You’re right. Just need to keep it together.

I took in a deep, cleansing breath before walking into the gym. All the girls turned their heads quickly before flipping them back to some unknown source of entertainment.

/Pfft. Probably just one of the jocks./

Yeah. Probably just a…guy…no. No it can’t be. My day is already bad enough as is. Please don’t let there be one of THEM in my class. But, pretty soon I was sure that good fortune must just be against me. Because right there, drinking water in the middle of the clump of girls were, not just one, but BOTH Logan and Evan.

I let out a loud groan, earning myself many dirty looks from surrounding girls. But you know what? I don’t even care anymore. I’m that upset.

Slowly I walked over to Paul, the gym teacher and the only teacher we can call by their first name, and waited for instructions. As if he were waiting for me, he blew sharply on his whistle gaining everyone’s attention.

“Alright you little sloths. Today we are playing dodge ball. Since we have some new kids, how about we let them show us what they’re made of. Chutney, Yale, you’re the team captains. Pick your team.”

Logan smiled and walked to the other side of the gym and Evan simply stayed still. His expression blank.

They began to call out names and I began to drift off into my own little world of worry and pain.

/Aw jeez Calista. You’re really bummed aren’t you?/

You got that right. I mean, I can’t stop thinking about what might’ve happened if my powers HADEN’T returned you know? Me along with everyone in my class would’ve been goners.

Then I felt a hard pinch at my arm.

“OW! WHAT THE HELL AMBER!?!”

I turned to glare at Amber Grant. Another preppy show off. She simply smiled innocently at me.

“Your name was called.”

I turned to see Evan staring at me. That face again! I hate that he keeps DOING that!

Just to get him to stop looking, I hurried to his side of the field. This was going to be horrible. Not only was I usually bad at dodge ball, but now I also had that weirdo who keeps staring at me. Today just wasn’t my day.

/Well stop wallowing in your own misery for a minute and get ready. The game’s starting./

Oh…yeah.

I moved to the furthest corner of the field and stood there trying to stop myself from crying. Why did this have to happen to me? What did I ever do to deserve all this!?

/CALISTA!/

I suddenly looked up. Just in time for the shoe to come smacking into my face. I slowly raised my hand to my face and when I took it away it had blood dripping off of it. That was it. I couldn’t take it anymore. I just fell, weeping and sniffing, onto the gym floor.

“Aw Jesus, somebody get her to the nurse. She’s crying.”

“Oh my god Calista I’m so sorry! I-”

“Just hurry up and get her out of here, she’s dripping blood all over the floor! Ew!”

“Well, whose gonna take her?”

“Nuh, uh. I’m not touching that bloody mess.”

“You’re so mean! I’ll take her”

“Don’t even think about it. You’re our best player. The game is already ruined as much as it can get. We don’t need to lose you to.”

“Okay. Fine”

“You guys are so selfish”

“Uh, hellooo? My floor!”

“Well someone’s gotta take her!”

“I am soo not cleaning that floor later. You guys can.”

“Just stop yelling so we can figure this thing out!”

Then a clear and stern voice rang over all of the pointless chatter,

“I’ll take her.”

Then, I felt myself being lifted off the floor and in-between the tears I could see Evan’s stern face looking down at me. Great. Just great.
