When Spike had returned from leading the bookkeeper away from them, the gang left the Town Hall and began to make their way to 18 Persimmon Mews. No one really said anything as they went along, all of them a bit on edge about the fact that another baby might have been about to be taken.

Leo's words were on Clementine's mind. Human design, he had said. Somehow, it made sense that someone was controlling the birds. It explained the strange, unnatural behaviour.

But then, that begged the question of how. How was someone controlling them?

"Guys," Spike said, breaking the silence. "I ain't coming."

All of them stopped walking, Clementine walking back over to her other half with a confused expression on her face. "What are you talking about? We need you."

Her brother shook his head, "Nah, Clem. Think about what you're doing - all of you. A girl is dead. Not just dead. Her friggin' eyes were pulled out of her face! And you wanna go play at being cops?"

"Spike-"

He threw his hands up, shaking his head. "If you had a brain cell between you, you'd walk away."

"That's fine," Bea replied bitterly. She was more hellbent than anyone to solve this, needing the money to help Jessie.

Spike began to walk away when he heard Bea ask Jessie to go with him.
Jessie scoffed, "What? No, I'm coming with you. I want to help."

"No, you're not. Go and put your feet up for a bit."

"You can't keep me cooped up all day 'cause you're worried something might happen to me. Tell her, Billy."

The girl turned to Billy in hopes of finding support, but Billy crossed his arms, giving her a sad look. "She's right, Jess. Tonight could be dangerous."

"Clem?"

Clementine bit her lip harshly as she met the girl's gaze. "Sorry, Jessie. If things were different, maybe. But not today."

Bea nodded to her friends in thanks, before addressing her sister. "We're not asking you, we're telling you."

"You're telling me?" Jessies repeated angrily. "You're not my mum, Bea. Why can't I come?"

"Because-"

"Because what?"

"Because you're a mess, Jessie!" Bea exclaimed before she probably even realised just what she was saying. But it was too late, she'd said it, and Jessie had heard. Therefore, there was no point in lying to her any longer.
"Because you're falling to pieces. And. . . and yes. I'm worried about you. We're all worried about you. You walked in front of a horse, Jessie. You're lucky to be alive. I don't want you getting hurt. I. . . I can't risk it. I can't risk losing you as well."
