Billy and Clementine had managed to convince a cart driver to allow them to hitch a ride on the back of his carriage. They both held on tightly as the cart went through the city streets. Persuading him it was an emergency, the man encouraged the horse to go faster.
As the cart was passing the theatre Billy instructed Clementine to jump. They both leapt from the back of the carriage, landing on their feet and running into the theatre, narrowly missing being burned by a fire-breather.
The lobby was filled with patrons all dressed head to toe in some of their finest clothes. Clementine couldn't help but think that being here, surrounded by these posh people, might just have been Billy's worst nightmare.
"That's him over there," Billy said quickly, grabbing Clementine's hand and getting her to follow him.
They both ran up to John Cooper, out of breath as they did so. He was kneeling next to the boy who had run off with the little girl who had crawled out of the garden bed. The man gave Billy a baffled look, clearly not having expected to ever see the boy again. "What are you doing here?"
"Where's the duke?"
"I haven't got time for this!" The man said angrily as he stood up, pushing Billy and Clementine towards the exit.
Billy shook his head, standing his ground. "That is not your son, John. It's a dummy, a copy of him."
When Clementine saw the look the man was giving Billy, she knew she needed to speak up. "Sir, I know this sounds insane, and it would be almost impossible to explain to you right now, but you need to trust us. We're not lying. Check his teeth and you'll see."
The man's eyes went from Billy to Clementine, and then back again. Billy rose his hands to say he wasn't going to fight him and nodded. "Please, just check his teeth, Mr Cooper. We're telling the truth."
John Cooper looked confused above all else but did it anyway. The way the two teens had approached him with such certainty made him believe them on some level.
Leaning down, the veteran gingerly assessed his "son's" teeth. His eyes widened in shock as he realised that the two teenagers had been telling the truth - it wasn't his son.
Standing up, the man stumbled away from the impostor, eyes staring down at it. "What. . . how. . ."
"As we said, it would be a bit too hard to explain at the moment Mr Cooper," Clementine said quickly. "Right now, we need you to take us to the duke, because we think he's in danger."
John Cooper seemed to go into bodyguard mode at that moment. His shocked expression morphed into one of determination as he led them towards where he knew the duke would be.
