The Glade was never the same after Aurora's death

The Glade was never the same after Aurora's death. It was completely silent, no one spoke a word. It felt as if the entire world was mourning, it wasn't a surprise to see tear streaked Gladers, or to hear the quiet sobbing in isolated corners.

People didn't know how to react, how to function without Aurora to guide them. They were lost, blinded by grief and pain.

Minho didn't run for ages, he left it all for Ben and the other Runners to do. He just sat in his room, his head in his hands in pure silence. Wishing he could see her one last time, to see her smile or hear her laughter. Minho was at a loss, he didn't know how to act, Aurora was the reason he got up in a morning but with her gone... What was stopping him? She had told him to use the pain to get everyone out of there, so he did. He tried and tried, until he could try no more.

He was tired, so tired — but Minho knew he would never give up until he could see Aurora again.

Alex couldn't cope. He had lost his boyfriend, the love of his life, and then he lost Aurora. His best friend, his soulmate.

He didn't talk to anyone for a long time, Alex had given up on caring. He couldn't care anymore, seeing as the two people who he lived most had been ripped away from him. Alex spent his time in the Med-jack hut, silently patching and fixing people up. He felt like Aurora during these times, how she tried to save everybody — but couldn't even save herself.

It ruined him, knowing that he could never see Aurora again — tearing his soul apart. It also destroyed him thinking about how on the day of her death, she thought how it was going to be a good day. Oh how wrong she was.

One night, Alex couldn't take the pain any longer. He couldn't cope with the heavy burden of his heart. So when he believed everyone else to be sleeping, he snuck into the Med-jack hut.

Alex desperately searched the shelves for the strongest pain relief medication he could find, his eyes wide and frantic as he searched for his escape.

He located them in a cupboard in the corner of the hut. Alex quickly unscrewed the lid and poured about twelve capsules into his opened hand. He assumed that this amount would be enough to kill him, Alex just wanted the pain to end.

Alex was about to put the pills into his mouth when he suddenly got tackled to the ground — the pain killers flying out of his hand. He looked up and saw Minho's panicked face hovering over his own.

"WHAT THE ACTUAL SHUCK ALEX!" Minho shouted, slapping the medication bottle out of his hand. "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?"

Alex lay on the floor, looking up at Minho. Although Alex could tell that Minho was angry, he also knew there were was a reason. Minho cared deeply for Alex, and he couldn't bare to loose another person he loved.

"I-I couldn't d-do it a-anymore," Alex stuttered, trying to not to sob in front of Minho who he always believed to be brave. "I just m-miss them so m-much."

Minho moved from above Alex and sat beside him, wrapping an arm reassuringly around his shoulder.

"I know," Minho sighed deeply, his eyes stinging. "I miss them so much, especially her."

Alex turned his head to the head to face Minho and saw two tears sliding down his cheeks. He took a deep breath. "H-how do you cope?" he asked, wanting to know how Minho wasn't feeling so lost and desperate.

"I do what Aurora said," Minho replied simply, gazing out of the Med-jack hut window. "I use the pain of losing her to carry on, use the pain to get everyone out of here. I promised Aurora that I would use the pain, and I am." his voice cracked at the end of his sentence.

It was quiet for a moment until Alex said quietly, "W-will it ever get better? Will the p-pain ever stop hurting?"

"I don't know Alex," Minho murmured. "But we have each other. Shucking promise me you won't try that again please. Talk to me about it."

"I promise." Alex said, glancing at Minho who had a delicate smile on his face.

"Good," Minho sniffed, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. "You daft shank."

The mood was sorrowful, there was not a happy face in sight. The wind was cold and harsh, nipping at the Glader's noses brutally. It was suitable weather for the day, a day of mourning.

About a week prior, a meeting was held about Aurora and what they were going to do, regards about burying her. There was an uproar as everyone disagreed, saying that Aurora deserved more than a wooden cross with her name scratched on.

So the next time the supplies came up, Alby asked for a block of marble, which he gave to the Builders as her headstone. Instead of being buried in the Deadheads, where it was dark and gloomy, everyone decided it would be better if Aurora was buried in the place she loved so much.

By the wild orchids and the river deep in the forest.

The Builders slaved away building her coffin, which Gally insisted had to be perfect, perfect for her as she deserved the world. And they then carved the shape of her headstone which had curved top, like the edge of a sphere.

Another mini meeting was held with Alby, Newt, Minho and Alex, about what should be carved onto Aurora's headstone. They swiftly came to an agreement.

The walk to the river was slow and meaningful, everyone was reflecting on their memories with Aurora. In front of all the Gladers were the Baggers and a couple of the strongest Builders, all carrying the coffin on their shoulders.

Behind them were Minho, Newt, Alby, Lysander and Alex walking in a line and then Gally trailed slightly behind them and the rest of the Gladers walked behind them. Everybody arrived at the river, and gathered around the buried hole.

The Baggers and Builders slowly lowered the coffin into the ground with strong ropes and vines wrapped around it and then stood back.

There wasn't a dry eye in sight, Minho's eyes were glued onto the coffin — watching the girl he loved being lowered into the ground. Alex was leaning on Lysander's shoulder, tears streaming down his cheeks, Newt and Alby tried to remain strong for the rest of the Glade — but everyone could tell that they were failing miserably.

The five boys took it in turns to throw a handful of soil onto the coffin, starting with Minho and ending with Alby. Minho then gently took something out of his pocket and threw it onto the coffin — a flower crown.

They stood back, linking arms and gazed at the headstone. Knowing that they tried their best, being tied together with grief and loss.
