Night Changes

CHAPTER 5

I kept waiting impatiently outside the operation theatre.

Ritz was in pain and she's delivering a baby at the moment. I felt so nervous I might as well puke.

After some time, the doctor called Rohit and then me simultaneously. I went in to find Ritz lying on a bed, tired but still smiling at my direction. I looked around and saw a thing in Rohit's arm.

No,not a thing. A baby.

I looked with fascination as I saw the baby sleeping peacefully. When I took him/her in my arms,I felt the world stopped and the only thing that existed was the angelic face I was seeing.

Rohit interrupted my thoughts: "It's a girl," and he smiled happily.

I went on to congratulate Ritz and I really couldn't believe there was a Ritz Jr in my arms!

"What are you gonna name her, Ritz? Have you guys decided something?"

"Samaira," She replied with a big smile.

"Beautiful," I said as I looked at baby Samaira smiling in her sleep.

I really couldn't take my eyes of that little baby in my arms. It felt unreal- She was sleeping in my arms, her lips slightly parted, her tiny fingers in a fist as she slowly threw her arms and hands in the air. I swallowed my tears. Ritz was a mom. She'll be a really good mom, I know that. It's such a nice feeling to just hold a baby in arms, I wonder how good does it feel to have one?

My train of thoughts came to a halt as I saw Jasprit walking inside, his hair a mess, clearly not combed. He still managed to pull it off though, he looked so cute. His t shirt and denims looked nice on him, a pair of spectacles on his eyes completed his I-just-woke-up-and-ran look, it was pretty clear he gave no effort to dress. He wasn't wearing his watch or contacts, unlike the few times I saw him at Ritz's home.

"I'm so sorry guys, I took my pills last night and so I overslept, I came running as soon as I saw your call, Ro, I-"

He came jogging inside but stopped in his tracks as he looked towards the baby in my arms.

He looked over to Ritz and Rohit, who smiled brightly towards him.

"That's..that's the baby?"

He came near Samaira and stared at her in awe like she was some alien. He looked even more dazed than me.

He gently poked Samaira's hand, as if to test if she was even real.

"Don't worry, it's true, do you want me to pinch you?" I said and all of us shared a laugh.

"No it's just that..I never saw a newborn baby before, she's so..so tiny and beautiful, I can't even imagine how good Ro and Ritz are feeling," he smiled and ran his fingers through his hair.

He never saw a newborn baby before? Weird.

"You will soon," Rohit winked and laughed.

He playfully narrowed his eyes at Rohit and concentrated on Samaira again.

"Do you wanna hold her?" I asked.

He looked so shocked as if I had asked him to buy me a freakin' Lamborghini.

"What?" I raised my eyebrows in confusion.

"I can't hold a baby, she'll slip," he scratched the back of his neck.

"C'mon, don't be nervous. I'll help you, you'll be fine. Just sit here..and..lift your arms..yes like that, now put one hand under her head and other under her back, good," I instructed and he followed, eventually carrying Samaira in his hands.
