Chapter 1: The Boy in the Photo

Y/n P.O.V

Stealing, fighting and killing was all we could do underground. My father had abandoned mother and I, and we were left to starve until I met this man called Kenny. Kenny taught me how to fight and steal so I could survive along with my mother but it wasn't long until Kenny had to leave saying he had to visit his sister on the other side of the dirty city. I waved him goodbye and when he left I decided to go steal some food for my mother who was sick.

I walked back home hiding the loaves of bread in my hoodie pocket, my hands were stiffly wrapped around the loaves and I shivered as the wind started to blow stronger. I hesitated at first but I finally chose to walk home past the playground even though nobody was there anymore. Walking on the path I noticed something black and white ahead and I speeded up just a bit more to snatch the item before the wind could. I stared and my heart pounded the boy in this photo was cute and I think I found my first love and I couldn't wait to show mum about this but I soon got lost staring into it and when I realised the sun was about to set I ran back home.

I opened the door and waited for mum to come hug me like she did every afternoon. Mum told me to only steal when it was necessary as she knew I had a good heart and never wanted Kenny to teach me in the first place. It was awfully dead quiet so I decided to go further into the house to see if mum was anywhere. I stepped into the kitchen and fell over something. "Owie," I whined as I rubbed my sore knees that hit the hard dirt floor and once my eyes adjusted to the dark room my eyes widened. Shocked and frightened I scrambled over and shaked my mother who was on the dirt floor. Her body was heavy and her eyes were closed it seems as if she were asleep but I knew that wasn't the case. I cried and sobbed in pain as this couldn't really be it, I knew she was going to leave me but this soon?

Author P.O.V

Y/n's mother was diseased with stage 1 heart cancer and there were 3 more stages left and the doctors and Kenny had said she had at least 4-7 years left. That was a lie. Y/n's mother named Kayli had asked Kenny and the doctors not to tell Y/n that she was on stage 3 and really only had 2-3 years left. By the time Y/n had realised, Kayli was already dead. Devastated as Y/n was she couldn't do anything anymore and gave her mother a proper burial. Y/n buried her mother in the abandoned playground where her mum said was her favorite place in the whole world as she was able to watch Y/n play and be happy.

"Mother..." Y/n said laying down a red rose(which represent the love and grief to the person that has been deceased.)

"You really deserved better and father should've never left us and your heart wouldn't be broken and you wouldn't have died. I wanted to tell you something when I got home but you weren't here but I think I found my first love today so I'll tell you about it...I found an image of a boy and just looking at him makes my heart beat faster and I feel like I want him and need him for the rest of my life just looking at him gives me comfort and happiness, is my love for him really true though?"

Y/n talked to her mother with tears and people who walked by couldn't help but pity her. Others soon came to the funeral who were close or knew your mother and placed down roses of yellow(represents friendship to show the bond) and dark pink roses(that represent thankfulness to the one that has died.)

Y/n fell asleep next to Kayli's grave with a sense of comfort that it gave but Y/n had to leave as Kenny came to fetch her to take her to her uncle on her mother's side as he was the only relative she had left. On the back of Kenny's horse she looked at the photo and couldn't help but smile, the boy gave her comfort and happiness even though it was just a photo.
