Ten years ago
Yongjie was ten years old when he first saw a young man standing in a corner of a building adjacent to a large boutique store. The young man was wearing his school uniform, his bag was hung heavy on his back and he held an ice cream on his right hand. The man was sobbing quietly.
This was the first time Yongjie saw an older man crying. He had always thought only children should cry. Seeing this man cry pulled a string in his heart.
Little Yongjie wondered what could have happened to him and why he was sobbing alone in a corner, and no one seemed to care either. He looked harmless and innocent, Yongjie noticed.
His mother was buying some jewelry in the boutique nearby and Yongjie had stepped out to get his favorite snack. He couldn't ignore the man because he felt his pain.
Yongjie was an only child. His father had abandoned his mother as soon as he found out she was pregnant. His mother repeatedly told him this, so much that Yongjie knew the history of his birth off by heart. Since he was four years old, he had lived with several relatives, most of whom treated him like an outsider, and others never accepted him completely as a family member.
Lately his mother was living with a man who wasn't too keen about him. Yongjie spent extra hours in school just to stay away from the man. He had a drinking problem and sometimes hit his mother but she still lived with him. His mother moved in with him since she was tired of squatting with her relatives who also mocked her for not having a husband. She decided to settle for less. She had no choice.
Yongjie was few meters away from the man now. He thought of what to call him, he wanted to call him brother because he looked like an older brother. He looked like HuiFeng's big brother. Huifeng was Yongjie closest friend in school. Sometimes his big brother came to pick him up. Sometimes Yongjie felt jealous and wouldn't share his toys with Huifeng for days.
Yongjie wanted to call him, 'sir,' out of respect, who knows if he might get angry, or maybe have a drinking problem like his step father.
The young man must have noticed the prying eyes of Yongjie. He turned around slowly. Seeing the boy beside him he quickly wiped his cheeks and smiled.
Yongjie's round eyes glared at the beauty of a man standing in front of him. His eyes were small and warm, his lips red and moist, his hands, sturdy and soft. His skin was a little glassy with tears.
Yongjie clutched his bag tightly as the young man knelt in front of him. "Are you lost, young boy?"
Yongjie was surprised to hear the question. The young man was worried about him getting lost than his situation. Yongjie shook his head. Instead he stretched his right hand and reached for the man's face. He slowly wiped the tears clinging to his eyes and cheeks.
The young man looked away shyly. Yongjie watched him blink back more tears. The young man held his hand and placed it on his lips as if to kiss his palms.
"Stop crying," Yongjie managed to say.
"Hmm, I will." The young man nodded. He wiped his face thoroughly. "See I stopped crying." he laughed suddenly exposing a clean set of white dentition.
Yongjie nodded. "You're so handsome. So don't cry."
"Me?"
Yongjie nodded.
Yongjie smiled when the young man burst into warm laughter again. "And you are a nice young boy. What's your name?"
"Fu Yongjie!" a voice called from behind them.
"My mommy is here, I have to go. Bye bye." Yongjie turned and ran to his mother's side. But deep down he wanted to hug the man. He wanted to kiss his tears and pain away. How beautiful would it be if spent part of the day making the man laugh. It hurt him to let go. The world was a big place and he knew it would be a rare event if he ever met someone like him again.
His mother held his hand as they hurriedly crossed the road and mingled with the crowd. He turned slowly to take one last glance at the man. The smile on his face was one he would never forget. It warmed his heart so much he'd never forget.
