At first Yongjie thought he was seeing things. His heart skipped a beat. He glanced at the young man standing beside him and blinked. It can't be. He must be that same young man he'd met years ago.
He hadn't aged at all. Yongjie couldn't hold his breath. He wiped beads of sweat off his forehead and managed to stand still. But he couldn't stop looking at the older man.
A ringtone filled the air and Yongjie watched the older man pick his call. As soon as he spoke, Yongjie recognized his voice. He really was the same man. Yongjie was sure this time. From the way the man entered the elevator, Yongjie knew he must have forgotten about that little boy.
But something looked off. He still had that melancholic gaze, there was sadness in his eyes. He only smiled when he spoke on the phone after which the sadness returned.
When the elevator stopped, Yongjie followed Xingsi down the hallway.
He stopped when he entered a room where the other staff were seated waiting for him. Yongjie approached the transparent window and watched Xingsi as he talked to the staff.Yongjie noticed that warm smile on his lips when he was talking. His eyes was warm and welcoming. All the emotions he had bottled up in his heart came flooding into his head. He'd missed this man. Yongjie wondered if Xingsi was single. He wasn't even sure if he was gay. Would he accept him if he confessed his love?
Yongjie looked away when Xingsi raised his head and glanced at the window. He must have seen him standing there. Yongjie quickly walked away and made his way towards the exit of the building.
Fu Yongjie's mom was clearing some dishes from their small dining when Yongjie walked in. He paused as his eyes roved the room. He could perceive the scent a man's perfume. He followed his mother to the kitchen.
"Yongjie, you're back?"
Fu Yongjie glared at his mother for a few seconds. "You're doing it again."
"What do you mean - doing it again?"
"He was here?"
Yongjie's mom stopped what she was doing and faced her son. "Yes, he was here."
"You told me your friend is getting married and wanted a wedding planner to help plan the wedding. You lied."
"Fu Yongjie, you're still young. You will not understand."
"Mom, I am not a little boy anymore," Yongjie filled his hand in his jacket pocket and brought out a wedding pamphlet he had taken from The Muse, after making inquiry. He handed it to his mother and headed to his room.
This was the third man his mother will bring home. And he was getting tired of having to live with strangers who didn't understand or play a fatherly role in his life.
He opened his wardrobe and began to stuff his shirts and pants in his school bag. His mom followed him.
"Fu Yongjie, he will be different," she said trying to convince him."How do you know he will be different? It's what you said last time but what happened, he hit you and he was a drunk!" Yongjie forced the clothes in the bag and zipped it forcefully.
"I can't afford to pay the bills in this house, my paycheck is barely enough to pay the bills."
"Is what you said last time." Yongjie reached for his phone charger and his laptop on the reading table.
"Where are you going?" Yongjie's mom cried. "You barely came back home now you're leaving again."
"I have school work, I need to concentrate," Yongjie muttered. He headed to the front door.
"Fu Yongjie!" His mother yelled following after him.
Yongjie ignored his mother's calls. He wore his shoes and stormed out of the house.
